Navy ES Principal Arrested

Anonymous
Why didn’t Navy form a search committee for a new principal? Is it because Coch is still technically an FCPS employee?

Assistant princepal leaving.

Sadly yes. Assistant principals have to work at two different schools before they can become a principal. That’s most likely the reason he is leaving.

This is wholly incorrect.

—an FCPS principal

I dont think it is a “have to” situation more like “it helps to” to be able to present themselves as a well-rounded candidate for a principal. “FCPS Principal” do you agree?

Yes. Being able to speak about leading and managing well in a variety of situations is what is most important. I would add that there are assistant principals who have been in several schools and are not ready to be a principal, and there are others who have only been at one school and are more than ready to be an excellent principal. I hope that the Navy community gets a strong principal who can help them rebuild trust and sustain some continuity.

How do we get that if they haven’t ever formed a committee

So you think he’d dare show his face after what he did to Navy and the community? He’s probably humiliated. There’s no way he’d even want to come back at this point.

I'm starting to think the radio silence about the replacement does mean Coch is coming back. It's the only thing that makes sense.

Actually what makes more sense is that the position is not open for hiring. I’m guessing he’s neither resigned nor been fired…yet. It cannot be advertised until one of those things happens. If he’s being fired, there are hoops to go through. Firing would have been really easy if he showed up to work drunk. But he didn’t as far as anyone here knows.

Yes and you have to be in a principal “pool of candidates” which is a very difficult process and only 15 people were accepted into this pool in April.

Anything is possible. What he did was not that bad. Not looking to start a debate here. Hope he is able to come back.

Seriously? Would you be saying that if he had struck and injured a child playing in the yard when his truck went careening down the hill and plowed into a house at 2 pm?

That can’t happen. What happened was a really, really big deal. In order for him to do his job effectively, he needs to have the trust of the community. Everyone doesn’t have to like him, but they have to trust that he can make good decisions. Too many people will question his ability to do that. Too many people will always wonder in the back of their mind how he’s coping with the pressure of the job. That’s not a fair situation for him or for the school. You don’t have to like that. It’s just the reality and the fallout.

+1 fleeing the scene of the accident was not a decision I expect a good leader to make.

I heard a rumor that he is coming back. The person who told me this has had kids at the school a long time and is pretty plugged in to things there. But a rumor is just that so who knows. I have mixed feelings about it. Teachers really seemed to like working for Coch and were genuinely distraught when the news broke. I got the sense that many would would welcome him back because a principal is pretty make or break to a teacher’s happiness at a school. When a good one leaves there I always the worry that next one will not be a good person to work for. But if Coch comes back I think it will make the community very divided. Some will be very happy and others wil be outraged and probably protest. It would probably get ugly. I wish we could just get a principal with a good reputation to come over and move on.
