It did make me pause because it seems like a very low number relative to what we went through in the last two years. There are more than 6,000,000 Marylanders, and the 14k deaths were heavily concentrated among the elderly with health issues. I'm sure a decent percentage would have likely died by now from something else had they never gotten infected from COVID.

When I see the cold hard numbers in front of me, it does make me realize how much of what we went through in the last two years was driven by little more than hysteria and fear far more than what was needed. We'd have been much better off with a very different approach to COVID targeted to the high risk demographics.

I have been dealing with death, stroke, cancer, heart attack, gender identity issues, severe mental health problems in my own immediate family for the past few years, with everyone turning to me to be the ‘strong one’. I don’t have the bandwidth to deal with other people’s mental health issues outside my own family. And I know I’m not alone. When the inane, constantly changing rules due to this panic make it 10X harder to get ANYTHING done, it complicates things 20-fold.

DP, but if you get COVID, contact your doctor and have them prescribed. My mom is severely immunocompromised and her PCP’s office called around and found Paxlovid for her when she tested positive. I had to schlep an hour a way to pick it up, but it was well worth the trip. She had an extremely mild case and with her diagnosis, COVID can carry a very, very high mortality rate.

THIS. It was very obvious from the cruise ships in spring 2020 that this mainly affects the elderly.

And the obese. My SIL works in a hospital that had an early COVID patient who was young 20s, and the media went wild. She said that what they weren't mentioning was that he was about 500lbs. We know and have known for years now who is at high risk. Nothing has changed.
