maybe they'll think about texit during trump's senate trial.

Whats that old saying? If 9 good men sit down to eat lunch with 1 nazi, you have 10 nazis eating lunch? Not calling them nazis, but the idea is the same. If they don't bother to distinguish themselves from the nutters, why should anyone else?

There is no Constitutional provision for a state to secede from the union.

So does that mean it's expressly forbidden? Because that sounds like saying "there's no agreement in our marriage to do this." But the marriage is so bad at this point that it seems like it might make a whole lot more sense for the parties to agree to an amicable divorce due to irreconcilable differences. The NYT had a headline yesterday about Republicans who joined the impeachment vote facing severe backlash. Another article a week or two ago somewhere else said many were remaining quiet because they feared for their lives. Congress has essentially been paralyzed for years.

We could have ironclad separation of church and state, free and widely available contraception, bans on gun ownership, free basic healthcare for all with QALY limits and optional premium private plans, a higher minimum wage, cheaper public universities and a slew of trade/apprenticeship programs starting in high school, strong environmental protection...

They could have mandatory prayer in schools, vouchers, a total ban on contraception and abortion, free and open carry everywhere, privatized everything, no minimum wage, no environmental protection laws...they could even have Trump as their king if they want!

People could just sell their property and move to the country they liked better during an interim transition period. After that, immigration laws would apply.

Just wondering. Explain to me why this is a really bad idea.

+1 They will have to raise taxes to cover the loss of federal money. *shrug* let them. Let's see how many companies stay in TX.

Texas has a lot of federal facilities. They would all leave -NASA, Pantex Plant, 24 military facilities, etc.

Secession is unconstitutional. Texas v. White. So yes that means it's forbidden.

Oh, I would love Texas and every other Trump state to succeed. Let Texas deal with their own border issues. Can't wait to see how industry reacts

On my mind would be that repealing environmental and OSHA regulations would be at the top of their agenda.

They already have lax enforcement for their massive petrochemical industry. From 2008 to 2018, Texas' state budget increased 41 percent. But during that time of increase, they cut their pollution monitoring budget from $578 million to $374 million.

The problem is, they wouldn't be poisoning only themselves for fun and profit. Air and water pollution doesn't stop at their borders.

I can't imagine what they'd dump into the Gulf of Mexico and pump into the air, but I can imagine that they would invite all the worst industries in with promises of no regulations, along with importing toxic waste to incinerate and bury. And new nuke plants? Hell, yes.

Houston is already the armpit of America. These yahoos would turn Texas into a toxic wasteland.

There are 620,000+ reasons why Texas cannot secede.

But the composition of today's Republican Party makes the analogy more like:

7 Nazis sit with 3 spineless Republicans. Now who have 7 Nazis and 3 spineless Republicans who will do whatever the Nazis tell them to do.

This is an embarrassing temper tantrum on behalf of that soon-to-be-forgotten legislator. Would love to actually see this play out. All the industry and tech companies drain out of Texas. So they have a lot of guns and they think that's their saving grace?

You know the California effort to exit came from Russia, yes? Very likely the same here.

Good luck attracting new industry and businesses in Texas with that kind of crazy stuff coming out at the seams. Why would billion dollar companies contemplate bringing businesses and jobs to Texas if that sort of crap is happening? They need to get in line.

Not to mention that with new energy technology finally catching on and bio alternatives to petrochemicals becoming more mainstream, oil is basically like the DVD player of energy technology - a lot of people still have them but probably won't in a few years.

Their "national" industry is becoming obsolete no matter how hard they dig in their heels.

Who are you talking to?

All these posters who seem to know very little about Texas. But think they know everything.
