I think Cruz underestimates how much the rest of us would like to see him go back to Texas.

Texas gets 35% of its state budget from the feds. Also think of all that federal research money leaving all the Texas universities.

Rs think colleges are over rated, so I don't think they'd care much.

If Texas secedes the border will move north of them. 193,000 federal jobs will be gone. The military bases and other facilities will shut down. 29 billion in federal funds will evaporate. They will have to negotiate all of their own trade and treaties, and anything coming from the Pacific will now have to be rerouted through the Panama Canal adding a week to its travel time.

Could you image how many people would leave Texas. Let’s face it. The US is not paying SS or Medicare for citizens of Texas.

Do we pay SS and Medicare for Americans who live overseas? Sure. Just wouldn't apply to any Texan who has not started paying into the system, and all current payments would stop and they would be at the mercy of Texas. I think a large number of Texans would think that was awesome in the short term.
