Wife Upset About Pregnancy

Anonymous
Worrying during pregnancy is normal, pandemic or not. At least during a pandemic, there is something more reasonable to worry about. Get used to it, your wife will be worried her entire pregnancy and for the decades after that.... I didn’t understand this until I had children, the worries never go away. You learn to stay busy and try to not focus on it.... You will need to learn to support her and manage your own feelings as time goes by...

OP here. We are broth very excited but she is super worried being pregnant in a pandemic. She is worried about Hong to appointments, working with co-workers ( she goes into work a couple times a month), and giving birth during a pandemic, etc. I know she is happy but the worry is keeping her from being super excited about it.

Is your wife into instagram? Tell her about @doctoranddancer. She's an ER doctor in NYC who got covid back in the spring while pregnant and had a perfectly healthy pregnancy and baby girl in June. I don't know her personally but she seems very friendly and I'm sure would respond to your wife if she DMed her to talk.

How long has it been? With both of my planned, very wanted, pregnancies I still felt overwhelmed and worried and concerned with timing initially. It’s a huge life change. Those feelings passed. There just an intial “oh shit!” phase. Give her support and it will likely pass quickly. Also, congrats!!

She is a healthcare worker ( works from home) and worried about getting pregnant with the pandemic. We had decided to wait until next fall to start trying, but we got pregnant. She is happy overall but I can tell she is worried. It sucks because I feel like I can’t be that happy about it. How do I help ease her worry? How can I be happy but respectful of her feelings at the same time?

First of all you did not get pregnant. Im assuming you are a male? You can be happy and supportive. If she is still worried after you reassiring her maybe she can talk to someone about her feelings?

Congrats

You know what he means. Plus, he said they’re expecting. That’s normal to say “ we’re expecting..” They are both expecting, not just her.

OP, you can absolutely be happy about the pregnancy and respect her feelings at the same time. I think what you're actually asking is how can you connect with your wife about your happiness while also connecting with her about her concerns. Part of that is understanding: you're excited about the baby, but she's focused on the pregnancy, which makes sense because 1) her body and her health is at stake and 2) she is solely and directly responsible for physically keeping the fetus safe in a pandemic. Part of that is communication: talk to her about exactly this. Tell her that you want to support her, but you also want to be able to express to her that you're feeling happy without making her feel like you don't understand how scared she is. See what she says. And part of this is redirection - you may want to find someone else to express some of that happiness with. She's in the hot seat on this one -- is there a way you can rely on someone else a bit?

OP here. She is 16 weeks pregnant and no. We would never consider any other option besides keeping our child. He was unexpected but a wonderful gift.

Troll. You don’t find out the gender until 20 weeks.

OP here. You can figure out the gender earlier. We found out at 8 weeks.

Insurance doesn't cover that blood test unless you are over 35

not op, but that's not true. my insurance covered it when i was 32

My younger sister's covered it at 33. And even if it's not covered, it's not that expensive - you can negotiate.

You don’t find out the gender for several years. You can find out the sex while baby is in utero.

Wrong. You can find out the gender at 11 weeks. Clearly, you have not been pregnant for awhile. I found of the gender of my second child in 2014 at 11 weeks. Blood test. No sonogram necessary for that now.
