My wife and I are expecting our first child. She’s 31 and I’m 35. She is happy that we are having a child but is upset with timing. We have been married for a little over a year. She is a healthcare worker ( works from home) and worried about getting pregnant with the pandemic. We had decided to wait until next fall to start trying, but we got pregnant. She is happy overall but I can tell she is worried. It sucks because I feel like I can’t be that happy about it. How do I help ease her worry? How can I be happy but respectful of her feelings at the same time?
OP, you can absolutely be happy about the pregnancy and respect her feelings at the same time. I think what you're actually asking is how can you connect with your wife about your happiness while also connecting with her about her concerns. Part of that is understanding: you're excited about the baby, but she's focused on the pregnancy, which makes sense because 1) her body and her health is at stake and 2) she is solely and directly responsible for physically keeping the fetus safe in a pandemic. Part of that is communication: talk to her about exactly this. Tell her that you want to support her, but you also want to be able to express to her that you're feeling happy without making her feel like you don't understand how scared she is. See what she says. And part of this is redirection - you may want to find someone else to express some of that happiness with. She's in the hot seat on this one -- is there a way you can rely on someone else a bit?
