They can have soda on the day of their birthday party. That's it. |
DS1 doesn't like the carbonation, so none. DS is ok with carbonation, but has only had soda 3 times this year on special occasions. Each time, it was less than a whole can/bottle. I buy ginger ale, but the kids don't like it. A case of 10oz cans has lasted us about 3 months. If offered at parties, I make certain that they have juice, lemonade, or water. |
My 7 year old has had some at my mom's when he goes to visit. But it takes him 3 days to finish a bottle and then he's over it. So maybe half a dozen a year? Small price to pay for free babysitting. |
She doesn’t like the bubbles. Says they burn. So, none. |
Adding too, if we were out and she wanted to order one that would be fine with me. It’s not some thing I have a taste for either so I don’t keep it in the house. When I was a kid we were too poor to buy extras and I think I just never developed a taste for it. I probably have to sodas a year. Now I will have a dark and stormy (with lots of lime) now and again but not a sweet drink person. |
My kid (age 8) has never expressed an interest in soda. I keep it in the house because I don't drink coffee and sometimes want a caffeinated beverage. I rarely drink it in front of her and if I do, she's like "Oh mommy must have a migraine." I don't think she thinks of it as an appealing thing. It's a grown-up drink like alcohol and she assumes it's just not for her. I doubt any of her friends' families drink it in their houses -- we are probably the most permissive family we know regarding food. We know a lot of people who don't let their kids have any processed food and even limit the amount of fruit they consume because of sugar content. I am a freak in our social circle because I do sometimes drink soda, which I think people attribute to the fact that I grew up working class.
Growing up, I was allowed to order soda at a restaurant if I wanted it, at a friends house if offered, or once I could buy it on my own, whenever I felt like buying it. I imagine we'll do something similar. I do think if you tell your kid they can't have something ever, it just increases the allure. I want to teach my kid to think for herself about stuff like that, otherwise she's bound to rebel. |
Exactly none. |
We don't ever have it in the house--I don't really like soda much either. My kids are 9 and 6 and it's just not really on their radar. I think the 9 year old has tried it a few times and not liked it, I'm not sure the 6 year old is even aware of it.
They have juice and chocolate milk though, so it's not all healthy stuff... |
Like a six pack of Mountain Dew a day. The bottles. |
My older kids drink soda at restaurants , friends houses or events. My 7 and 3 year old have never had any. My 7 year old has been asking a lot , also saying everyone at her sports practice gets to drink soda. I have seen many of their parents bring fast food with soda so I know she’s not lying but I’d rather she not have any yet, we got her some sparkling juices and waters to try instead. |
Most families I know don’t drink any soda. Maybe the kids have it at a restaurant or party once in awhile. |
Zero soda. 11yo |
Maybe twice a week? We mostly drink diet soda as a "treat." I don't buy juice or other sugar beverages, but I don't mind them having a sugar free soda once in awhile. Diet root beer is a favorite. Kids are 9, 11, 15. |
None. Apple juice for birthdays and holidays. |
The fake sweetner is worse than HFCS. |
