My kid (age 8) has never expressed an interest in soda. I keep it in the house because I don't drink coffee and sometimes want a caffeinated beverage. I rarely drink it in front of her and if I do, she's like "Oh mommy must have a migraine." I don't think she thinks of it as an appealing thing. It's a grown-up drink like alcohol and she assumes it's just not for her. I doubt any of her friends' families drink it in their houses -- we are probably the most permissive family we know regarding food. We know a lot of people who don't let their kids have any processed food and even limit the amount of fruit they consume because of sugar content. I am a freak in our social circle because I do sometimes drink soda, which I think people attribute to the fact that I grew up working class. Growing up, I was allowed to order soda at a restaurant if I wanted it, at a friends house if offered, or once I could buy it on my own, whenever I felt like buying it. I imagine we'll do something similar. I do think if you tell your kid they can't have something ever, it just increases the allure. I want to teach my kid to think for herself about stuff like that, otherwise she's bound to rebel.
