Should I ask my neighbor if I can use their pool this summer?

Wow, that'd be ballsy as hell of you. And NOT in the good way.

No, it's so forward and rude.

This! Don’t do it.

Our next door neighbor has a pool and we've never once asked to use it. They invite us over often to use it and when they go on vacation they always offer it to us. I never thought about the liability aspect but based on that alone I wouldn't ask. Sorry, OP.

I think it's just yet another sign of the age of entitlement that we're in these days. Some people seems to really think they're entitled to pretty much anything and everything that someone else has or has worked for. The best thing is when they say "oh yeah, but we didn't get a pool because X" where X is any number of disadvantages of pool ownership that they expect their neighbors to deal with so that they get to visit a free waterpark from their backyard.

I find it fascinating, personally.

I wouldn't ask, but maybe get your kids to stare at it longingly once in a while, and maybe she'll offer.

No op. If the neighbor wanted you to use she would have offered.

OP, has she ever invited you to use the pool? Ever said anything like "your kids can come swim anytime"?

If not, then no way should you think that she has any interest in opening up that giant can of worms.

I do have a friend with school-aged kids whose next-door neighbors are an older couple with a pool. The older folks go away for most of the summer and have told my friend to just go and use the pool in exchange for keeping an eye on the house, etc. Different story, especially since it was initiated by the pool owners.

Oh FFS you are as rude as OP. Entertain your own kids.

OP sounds like she might enjoy this - like a small child: "if I can't enjoy it, neither can YOU!"

I would be way to embarrassed to ever ask this of a neighbor. She will offer it to you if she's interested.

If not, there's always next summer and the hope that things will be better.

Why would you have to? If this was my pool, I would let my neighbor use the pool given the circumstances.

OP: I would ask. I'd send an email, so she could think about it w/o it being awkward. I would make it incredibly clear she could say no. I would offer to chip in for pool maintenance upfront. I would say we would use it at any time that suited her. I would bring my own chairs over/not touch any of her stuff. I would make it clear that I was only asking because of COVID, etc and 100% understood that this would not continue to any other summer, etc.

Wow. No way. If someone asked me to use my yard or pool I would think they had a lot of nerve.

No very rude to ask. Get yourself one of those inflatable kid pools and call it a day.
