Should I ask my neighbor if I can use their pool this summer?

Anonymous
Don't do it.

We have good friends who live down the street and have a pool. We have hosted them for many family meals and vice versa. I know they would say yes if we asked to use their pool, but I would not ask. If they offer, we will definitely say yes, but we are not bringing it up or even hinting.

Has OP been back? This seems like a troll post. If you’re not friends the answer is “no”. Favors in the era of COVID can be fraught as people have different levels of fear and risk tolerance and health circumstances can be unique. If you’re close enough that you know your friend will be comfortable to say “no” that’s one thing but I wouldn’t even ask my best friend (of course I know she’d offer if she was comfy) to use her pool right now. And it stinks because our neighbors DO have an awesome pool and I eye it wistfully every day!

You simply cannot ask. As others have pointed out it puts her on the spot. Don’t do that.

PP detailing all the work with hosting at a pool, we had a pool growing up and it was my job to maintain it all summer long. The work wasn’t that extensive. The chemicals must be added daily and you should be cleaning whether or not guests come for sanitation reasons. That’s hardly the point though. The point is that it’s an improper request.

Must be a troll post, else the OP is a sick human.

I know people who had someone ask them to use their pool for her morning swim. They said no and found the situation to be awkward.

She even offered to pay them.

Most people don’t feel comfortable with non-family/long-time friends in their house when they are out.

Would you welcome a lawsuit, too?

Please cite all the DMV homeowners with pools sued by neighbors in the last 10 years. I'd bet there were more people struck by lightning.

We had a pool growing up and the neighbors were allowed to use it basically whenever they wanted. The issue wasn't lawsuit concerns, it was the kids started getting basically dumped at our house all day every summer. My mom became basically a free nanny, not only watching them all, but feeding them too. Plus kids break things and are loud. People are mooches; give them an inch they take a mile.

The issue wasn't lawsuit concerns because your parents were very naive. If any of those kids got injured or worse-drowned, that would have been a maga lawsuit for your generosity.

+1. As a pool owner, i fail to understand why I'd take that chance.

Please cite all the thousands of pool owners sued by the neighbors in the last few years -- it's truly an epidemic, right? Also, don't let the neighbor kids play basketball in your driveway, either, they could roll an ankle and sue you for $50,000. Do you participate in a car pool? Do your let your teen have friends in their car? Do you ever invite people on your boat? Do you ever invite people to your vacation home? Why even ever have guests at the house, period? LAWSUITS are lurking around every corner!

Is asking a neighbor to swim in their pool uncouth? Yes. Are you likely to get sued and financially ruined if some kids swim in your pool? No.

Not true. PP is a troll. Don't listen. Get a job.

I do t think it’s wrong to ask about the pool. She might say yes!

It's very uncouth. You don't invite yourself over to anyone's home. Including their pool. Seriously, how is this even a question?
Anonymous
I don't see the reason to call her names. Calm down people.

OP join a public pool when they open, or buy an above ground one yourself. Something.

No, OP got his answer 10 pages ago. He's moved on, but we clearly haven't.

OP must be of lower intelectual capacity if they think this is appropriate.
