Should I ask my neighbor if I can use their pool this summer?

It's rude. No. They pay a fortune to have that pool. It is not your place even if you were close friends. You want them cleaning up after you when you leave the pool? Unless someone incites you, you absolutely do not ask. Manners!

Is this your real life pool or your imaginary pool?

If real life pool, now you know that most people feel awkward to ask. You can let your neighbors know they are welcome.

We have a pool and LOVE having people over. But each time friends come over, we have to do a lot of work. First, we have to clean the pool. Even though we have an auto vac, it doesn't get everything and doesn't skim the top. I still have to vacuum the pool. Empty and clean the filter. Test and add chemicals. That process can take an hour (a hot sweaty job). On top of that, visitors NEVER leave the pool area like it was when they arrived, despite best efforts. We always have to put the rafts and things back the way we like it, find little pool toys in the filter, etc. Then there's the extra dirt in the pool from kids playing. Hair, dirt, grass.

It all adds up to a lot of work and takes planning. For our family, it's totally worth it because we love the social aspect.

However, I have a friend with many kids who used to text me "hey, we'd like to come over today. Maybe in an hour?" It seemed really entitled to me, but I finally explained to her that it's a lot of work. She admitted she had no idea. She thought the pool was just always ready, or maybe we maintenanced it every morning and that it was easier than it is. She had no idea it involved planning and hard work.

Anyway, my point is they would have invited you if they were open to such a thing. And it's nothing like popping over to swing on a swing set.

OP, I combed through all 10 pages and this is the only really useful post on this thread. Ignore the rest of the rude haters.

Would you welcome a lawsuit, too?

Please cite all the DMV homeowners with pools sued by neighbors in the last 10 years. I'd bet there were more people struck by lightning.

We had a pool growing up and the neighbors were allowed to use it basically whenever they wanted. The issue wasn't lawsuit concerns, it was the kids started getting basically dumped at our house all day every summer. My mom became basically a free nanny, not only watching them all, but feeding them too. Plus kids break things and are loud. People are mooches; give them an inch they take a mile.

Who doesn't want a group of loud obnoxious brats who aren't related to them using their pool during a quiet summer afternoon. Maybe the neighbor can grill some steaks for your twerps too.

And homeschool them. And set up some music, maybe get a band, have a free summer camp in their backyard Should only cost a few grand, I'm sure they could afford it.

I agree with the vast majority of posters. OP you are gross. And anyone defending you are equally as disgusting.

I’m not going to quote the pool owner who went over the work involved : I agree! We only have a hot tub which is low maintenance because we are careful but when the DCs have a party something always need more maintenance afterwards. It’s worth it to us for their party. But random neighbor. No.

OP- ignore the rude comments posted here- no need for people to call you names. I agree with the "don't do it" advice. I have many friends in the neighborhood with pools and they never invite others over to swim, including us. I have no issue with it and wouldn't ask (even though they are good friends). We belong to a pool so we go use that. I agree with the posters that you should consider buying an above ground pool for the summer.
