Is anyone watching Dirty John tonight? Betty Broderick's story

I can't help but think that if Dan and Linda had treated Betty with a modicum of decency and compassion, they'd still be alive. She had a screw loose, but he was an absolute creep.

I don't think anyone deserves to be murdered, but I think you can also bring bad karma on yourself by being a terrible person. And Dan was.

Yes, the gaslighting and cruelty was horrible. My young teen son watched a little of it and concluded that he drove her insane. I had to explain to him that psychological cruelty doesn't justify murder, morally or legally. But he was very sympathetic to her.

Finally, more and more, a light is being shone on this kind of post-separation abuse/coercive control, as well as the effect of emotional and psychological abuse in a marriage. Murder and violence is NOT the answer, but Dan was a calculating malignant narcissist and his goal was absolutely to destroy Betty. Which he did.

Yep, and Linda was Dan's "flying monkey". She played right into Dan's narcissist playbook.

Young but old enough to have some empathy toward the woman she was replacing.

Both had personality disorders, but his behavior seemed downright sociopathic.

Interesting that she keeps being denied parole.

I was just thinking how many DCUM wives are on the verge with the stuff they post.

There are millions of people who don’t know the story; it’s fresh enough for us. At 8 I wasn’t following a lot of true crime and at 10 I wasn’t watching a lot of made for TV movies.

Because she hasn't expressed sincere remorse. Not sure I blame her. They tried to destroy her using their legal and social advantages; she felt powerless and destroyed them physically. She was the wronged party and at such a disadvantage in the financial and custody settlement. Not that I condone murder, but I can understand her feeling cornered and lashing out in the worst way possible. Especially when she was barely allowed to see her children, when at least two of them expressed a clear desire to live with her (rather than be raised by dad's housekeepers). Such a sad, toxic situation, fueled largely by the victims' callousness and lack of respect for her imo. I can understand her relief that she doesn't have to be tormented by them any longer. Too bad she didn't have the therapeutic support she needed to learn to process her hurt and anger more productively. But if nothing else, she should have given more thought to the fallout for her children.

+2 At least if this happened today, there would have been a forensic accounting and she would have gotten half. Far more than she was awarded thanks to the machinations of her ex. Also more likely to have had court-ordered therapy and then a more successful custody resolution. All would have helped her preserve her dignity while adjusting to the major adjustment in identity and lifestyle.

That A&E link is nuts. He managed to get everything and she had basically no power. He got her committed at one point!

With all their assets she ended up with something like a 30K settlement and had to lease a condo? wtaf? He completely screwed her over on every level. How would anyone take that well and not feel deep and lasting hatred for that person, with whom you had had nine pregnancies and supported through two grad schools?

So interesting how the Lifetime movies portrayed her so differently just 25 odd years ago. Dan and Linda were definitely portrayed as sympathetic and Betty was nuts.

They all got what they deserved. Kids are better off without them. Im certainly not fan girling Betty.

Still can believe he cut one daughter out of his will. Clearly she was acting up because of their divorce.
