Yes, the gaslighting and cruelty was horrible. My young teen son watched a little of it and concluded that he drove her insane. I had to explain to him that psychological cruelty doesn't justify murder, morally or legally. But he was very sympathetic to her.[/quote]

Finally, more and more, a light is being shone on this kind of post-separation abuse/coercive control, as well as the effect of emotional and psychological abuse in a marriage. Murder and violence is NOT the answer, but Dan was a calculating malignant narcissist and his goal was absolutely to destroy Betty. Which he did.

+2  At least if this happened today, there would have been a forensic accounting and she would have gotten half. Far more than she was awarded thanks to the machinations of her ex. Also more likely to have had court-ordered therapy and then a more successful custody resolution. All would have helped her preserve her dignity while adjusting to the major adjustment in identity and lifestyle.[/quote]

That A&E link is nuts. He managed to get everything and she had basically no power. He got her committed at one point![/quote]

With all their assets she ended up with something like a 30K settlement and had to lease a condo? wtaf? He completely screwed her over on every level. How would anyone take that well and not feel deep and lasting hatred for that person, with whom you had had nine pregnancies and supported through two grad schools?[/quote]
