Huge difference between Macfarland and DCI PARCC scores. Macfarland would definitely be a no for us. Overwhelming majority are below grade level. |
We're the family with twins who just got into MV8 and are deciding between MV8 and Bruce Monroe for PK3. We are not IB for BM -- we did the lottery for our kids, who are Spanish dominant -- we are inbound for LaSalle-Backus Elementary school which feeds into New North Middle School. We don't want to send our kids to either of those schools, primarily because we are heavily invested in bilingual education. Assuming our kids stay at BM, would our kids still get into MacFarland even though we're not IB for Mac Farland? |
Yes their approved cap is much higher than current expected enrollment from feeders so that’s what I mean by approved. With the high demand already now, I would not be surprised if they did expand but it would have to be at another location because I don’t think there is room at the current campus. The easy way to do it is the new location could be the middle school and current location high school or vice versa. |
Yes. I too am bullish on MacFarland. |
Good luck to you. With only 24% kids at grade level in ELA and even worst 12% in math, it has a long, long way to go..... |
Yes, it's a feeder pattern - so BM, Cleveland Spanish, Powell, and other DCPS dual language schools (except for Oyster Adams and Bancroft, sigh) feed to the dual language cohort of Macfarland. OP, you also have a decent shot at a lottery slot at O-A next year for PK4. |
A lot of schools had a long way to go, once upon a time. |
The higher ceilings you are referring to will fill the current campus, which as you said won't fit larger cohorts from the feeders. Additionally, each feeder has a fixed number of spaces available for its students at DCI. Those quotas and the DCI charter's ceilings are not large enough to accommodate the larger cohorts at Stokes and MV UNLESS a) there is far larger attrition from feeder schools to DCI than has been the case and or b) DCI decides to expand. DCI is well aware of the expansions at MV and Stokes, and that is why MV and Stokes have explicitly told parents of new ECE students that there is no longer a guarantee. DCI administrators told the PCSB parent advisory group last year that there is no expansion plan on the table, that they need to 'perfect their model' first. Of course, that could all change in 7 or 8 years. But if you want 100% certainty for your 3 yo, you don't have it. |
This is critical to your decision, and I wouldn't rely on an answer here (unless it provided a citation). I would call the school to ask. My understanding, which could be wrong, is that OOB feeder rights end when you get the terminal grade of a school (meaning you would not have feeder rights to MacFarland), but it could be different for language programs. |
I think the answer is at the top of page 3 of this document and that you would have the right to attend MacFardland: https://dcps.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dcps/publication/attachments/SY1920-School-Feeder-Patterns-July-2019_0.pdf But I'd call BM to confirm that. |
And they still do.......no significant change in neighborhood middle and high school. It’s a joke that DCPS is celebrating a small increase in scores in 5 years yet 3/4ths of the students are below grade level still. |
Of course we all know it’s not 100% but it’s 60-80% and statistically it’s a hell of a lot better than 0% at the IB middle school for us. |
No worries OP, there is a long waitlist for prek3 so if you don’t take the spot, the next person will jump at the chance. LOL. But I would say start saving money now then for middle school to go private or else plan to move to the burbs if you want a decent middle school. The likelihood of winning the lottery for a decent middle school is significantly lower than elementary, |
It is a neighborhood school. How can they control the cohort and keep out “unknown” kids? |
they can't completely. But having the Spanish feeders as well as their geographical feeders means more of their seats will be filled by kids coming from schools they have a relationship with. |
