Great article: "Democrats are in a Bubble on Immigration"

I am SO much more bothered by the idea that our country is caging children. And I dearly hope there are more voters like me than there are children of immigrants (all of you) rushing to slam shut the door to freedom and opportunity.

What bothers me is that I can’t send my child to my neighborhood school overrun by illegals.

Why not keep the borders open for ALL the Latinos,
Africans and Asians who want to come?

Um, how many can YOU house, feed and educate?

It bothers me that you don’t want to do anything about the foster we already have, who are waiting for a caring person to adopt them. And you do nothing?

I’ve had 3’foster children. You?

There is no illegal immigrant problem in most of the U.S. For much of the immigration haters is just the sorehead factor. Unless you are a Native American you are the spawn of immigrants who did exactly what these current immigrants want to do, which is find a better life in the U.S. There were just no immigration laws then.

Dems tried to pass immigration reform when Obama was president. Republicans bloced them, as they always do.

Ummm, did you not watch the debates??? Castro, and a majority want to decriminalize crossing the border illegally. That does not sound like border control?

Decriminalize does not mean you get rid of border control and have open borders and stop deportation, dummy. It means you treat illegal immigrants more humanely while you're processing them. Get out of your stupidity bubble.

We want more LEGAL immigrants. But nice try, PP.

Bans from Muslim countries and how many kids in concentration camps, kids whose parents were LEGALLY seeking refugee status suggests this is not actually the case.

The remains of the concentration camps are in Europe, my friend. Go see them.

The eugenic movement that lead to concentration camps in Germany AND the US had it's roots in the US, my friend. Go learn some history.

Of course they did. Party over country for the GOP every damn time. They would allow this country to be destroyed if the alternative was having a Democrat save it.

+100
I think it would be extremely instructive for liberals to take a trip to Auschwitz and learn about the atrocities that occurred at *actual* concentration camps. Or at the very least, a field trip to the Holocaust Museum would be eye-opening.

Oh no, we are NOT doing this bullshit again. Call them concentration camps or not, but ALL observers in good faith of Republican rhetoric and actions towards immigrants since Trump see the absolutely clear parallels between the xenophobic ideas and policies that lead to the Holocaust and the language and rhetoric and actions towards immigrants.

The fact is, the Democratic party has never been pro illegal immigration -- Obama deported by the planeload. What we want is HUMANE treatment of people at the border, not open borders.

It makes me tear my hair out that the Bannon/Miller ploy to stoke xenophobia and use immigrant children as a way to garner votes is working. Yet, it is. We (Democrats) have no choice but to stand up for humane treatment of immigrants, yet immigration status has been so effectively weaponized by the Republican establishment that it may be a losing proposition.

All I have to say is SHAME, SHAME ON YOU. If you're Christian, this is not what Christ wanted you to do.

Party over human rights too. GOP has zero problem using illegal immigrant labor.

Dishonest rhetoric. I am not in favor of open borders. I am in favor of humane treatment at the borders.

This is why a lil bit of education or atleast the ability to find out what the word means goes a long way in understanding it. Decriminalize isn’t the same as open borders. In law there are two types , criminal law and civil law. Decriminalize simply means that the families who cross the border will be punished by civil law, not by criminal law. It means we don’t treat desperate people as rapists and murderers. It means we will be kind and humane but you would still be punished in a civil manner and involves jail time. But if you have criminal record or have committed other crimes while here illegally then and only then will you be considered a criminal.

To the op, yes. I am a democrat & have know that my party is more interested in helping folks without Napier’s then in helping my middle class family. We simply cannot solve everyone’s problems. We just can’t. It’s not ‘inhumane’ to say we can’t take you in. It’s inhumane to over extended & pretend like we can.
Yes- Dems are making immigration decisions in an echo chamber.

Civil penalties are usually nominal with some fines attached.
So basically you are saying that sure, cross the border. It’s a civil penalty. Pleas pay a 100$ fine, but you get fee healthcare and all the social services that you need to stay in this country.
If I’m illegal, I’m coming over right now for that deal!

Understand what a civil penalty is first.

Civil penalties do not involve jail time. Only criminal penalties for the poster 2 above this.

Wanting to curb illegal immigration doesn't automatically mean one is xenophobic. Ask many legal immigrants and you might be surprised.

I’m a legal immigrant who followed the rules. I had relatives who could not come to the US and ended up in Germany instead.

Why did they need to follow the rules? Maybe they should have gotten a fight to Mexico and crossed the border illegally? Seems this is the behavior we are encouraging!!!!

DP. Also a legal immigrant who followed the rules and jumped through all the hoops and whose career was hampered by the interminable visa and green card wait.

I can't bring my elderly parents here to live with me because health care is unaffordable for them. Even when my mom visits on her 6-month visa that I had to pay $$ for and then $$$ to extend, CBP routinely detains her in secondary for several hours with no explanation (this was under Obama--she hasn't come to visit under Trump) before letting her finally come in. The last time this happened I was commiserating with another immigrant at Dulles who was in the same boat as me, waiting for her mom to come out of secondary, and she was just incensed about the Dem position on ilegal immigration. And that was before Dems jumped the shark.

I also have friends from other places (mostly India) who have been here for 15 years and are still waiting for their green card.

I have to vote against Trump, obviously, but I feel that the Democratic party has lost me.
