Actual armed teacher in school-I’m concerned

I don't understand how she is allowed to keep a gun in her car during the school day if it is on school property. If the car is parked off school property then that's different. (The article keeps reloading before I can read it in its entirety.)

I agree. I think that every school should have at least one trained/vetted staff member who conceal carries. It could be a math teach, a clinic nurse, a music teacher, an administrative assistant...Maybe the person could be a former police officer, FBI or military.

No one would know who it was.

This what they do in Colorado. I strongly disagree with it, because the teachers know who carries and that surely changes the relstionship they have together. Plus it's highly unlikely that teacher would be able to take down a shooter, and highly likely there might be an accident instead.

I think that the concealed carry should be kept confidential. Certainly, a former police officer or FBI agent would be able to keep that information to themselves.

Teachers sitting around in the break room chatting about who "gets" to wear a gun at work or who should be avoided at work because they are carrying would not be an ideal situation.

LOL @ her 1.5" blade knife. You can't even clean fish with that knife. She's going to defend herself/kids with that against a guy with multiple guns??

Something needs to be done to make our schools feel safe. That is what this teacher is saying.

I hear you and I agree. People shouldn't jump all over her due to her opinion. The only issue I see, in addition to the knife, is that she admitted to having a gun in her car in the school parking lot. I know the article says VA law allows it, but local districts can set stricter policies and I am almost 100% sure FCPS is one of them.

I hate guns as much as the rest of you and feel they have no place in schools, but she’s entitled to her opinion (and to publicize it) as much as we’re entitled to ours. This fear-mongering on both sides is why we can’t have a productive conversation.

I agree.
The gun on school property very well might be an issue with the employer though.

Teachers with guns in their cars don't make my kids' schools feel safe. Neither do teachers with tiny little knives on chains around their necks. And teachers actually carrying guns in schools really, really, really don't make my kids' schools feel safe.

What does FCPS say about guns on school grounds?

Here is state law, linked from the VA State Police site:

I haven’t found school policy outside of what is listed in the SR&R for students.

The NBC article says VA allows guns to be kept in cars on school grounds, but as I read the law it seems to state otherwise.

B. If any person knowingly possesses any firearm designed or intended to expel a projectile by action of an explosion of a combustible material while such person is upon (i) any public, private or religious elementary, middle or high school, including buildings and grounds; (ii) that portion of any property open to the public and then exclusively used for school-sponsored functions or extracurricular activities while such functions or activities are taking place; or (iii) any school bus owned or operated by any such school, he is guilty of a Class 6 felony.

I would be really upset. It is so easy to forget to put your gun away in the trunk safe. It just takes one day for her to forget and for curious to get his hands on it. Or an accidental discharge. And the knife!? My god.

12:09 here. Upon further reading it sounds like by state law she is within her rights. I don’t know what FCPS policy is.

I think she is covered under state law exemptions:

(vi) a person who possesses an unloaded firearm that is in a closed container, or a knife having a metal blade, in or upon a motor vehicle, or an unloaded shotgun or rifle in a firearms rack in or upon a motor vehicle; (vii) a person who has a valid concealed handgun permit and possesses a concealed handgun while in a motor vehicle in a parking lot, traffic circle, or other means of vehicular ingress or egress to the school;

you Know what. I’d be ok with all the non classroom support staff being armed. They get an open carry permit if needed too.

They get vests.

Now you have the front office. Janitors, support staff around the building armed and ready.

Some kid tries to shot up the place you have multiple
Responded from all areas of the building.

I’m ok with the staff in a fun battle with a perp.

Anything to save children’s lives while waiting for police with more fire power.

You wouldn’t know to be if she hadn’t publicized it. Focus on what you can control - sounds like she’s well within the law here. Again, I hate guns but it’s not productive to be spiteful toward someone else’s lawful behavior.

OP, or anybody else in within Halley’s boundaries, what is the general feeling around the neighborhood? Can you get an idea? I hope people aren’t too quick to unfairly judge this teacher.

She doesn't come across as very bright or mature. For starters, she should have not gone running to the news so she could be in the spotlight. That alone shows she does not have the judgment necessary for much of anything.

I hope she gets into trouble with FFX, which I'm quite sure does not allow guns on school property. The knife is beyond absurd, too. I would immediately yank my kid out of her class for the poor judgment alone.

How about fairly judging the teacher?
