Tim Kaine's Speech

I couldn't make out what the woman in the audience shouts out at 22:02 to which he responds he's "hiring for the speechwriting team." Anyone hear what it was?

I'm going to listen to both speeches total later, but despite voting for Kaine a few years back, I hadn't heard him speak. He sounds just like my pastor, which I love!

He is such a decent and good person, and a fighter for justice and not a pushover. He is the kind of politician that makes you believe there is still good in the system. I am so thrilled he is the choice. He still lives in the same house in a random neighborhood in Richmond, still goes to the same AA church he's been going to for decades, drives the same beat up car, is the salt of the earth. Everyone who knows him likes him, even if they don't agree politically, and that can be important as VP if he has to work with Congres and bipartisanship.

I am curious as to what Trump will say, here could be some counter attacks:

1) he's boring: he's kind of dorky but he owns it
2) he accepted $100,00+ in gifts as governor: this is a touchy subject in VA due to the McDonnall scandal, but Kaine reported all his gifts and was never accused of doing anything wrong, but that is out there
3) he had to close the restrooms on 95 during the VA State budget crisis when he was governor: people in VA still get really worked up over this one, there was a urge budget shortfall, and the GA which was republican controlled refused to really work with him or compromise on certain budget items, so he said instead of cutting special programs he closed the public rest areas along 95.
4) his wife and her family: Kaine is married to the daughter of a former Va Governor who was a republican (but had old school democratic tendencies, like he sent his daughters to public school in inner city RIchmond, pushed for desegregation, etc.). Many older generation RVAers say Kaine only got elected because of his FIL, which is pretty bogus. Also Mrs. Kaine does not look like Melania Trump, if Trump ever say disparaging remarks re her looks like he did Heidi Cruz I would be so pissed.

I knew Anne Holton in her early 20s. She was cute, nice, and smart-as-a-whip. Of course, she's now 58, and owns it. She is a very distinguished woman from a remarkable family with a tradition of public service, not one of racism and slumlording.

If Cheeto Jesus ever goes after her looks, I will be even more pissed than you.

A benign hack. Fine choice. But again, a puppet-shaped D could run and win. It's a rock solid Democratic country when it comes to presidential politics.

Same here.

In my mind I'm comparing this speech to Trump's. A refreshing difference.

I was a Bernie supporter and was pissed he was chosen. However, I must say that Day 1 is going pretty damn well.

3 pages of near unanimous support for something political. It's a Christmas in July miracle.

I agree. Had was excellent and Pence will have a hard time debating him.

+1 although I'm still on the fence

I'm sure he looks like an albino beside trump.

I was really not fired up about Kaine prior to his speech; I thought he was the safe choice (white, male, religious, moderate), and prayed that H would choose him over Warren given the whole situation. But now -- wow! I am Team Clinton-Kaine all the way. That was an exceptional speech, it actually moved me. So refreshing to hear actual American values talked about by leaders of this country, instead of all the BS and fear mongering. He seems like a genuine person and he's also very on top of the political situation. Great pick.

Such a positive speech and a breath of fresh air. I was very impressed as well. Looking forward to the debates.

I like the fact that Kaine is a proven winner, with an 8-0 record in elections. It's going to drive Trump crazy, to have to deal with a man in this race who is a much bigger winner than he is. And who has a son who serves in the Marines while his boys go on safaris and shoot endangered wildlife.

I expect we'll be hearing Cheeto Jesus talk about the size of his hands again soon. He'll hardly know which of his insecurities to give voice to first.

Very disappointed she chose a man...and a white man at that.
