Tim Kaine's Speech

I know plenty of hispanics who stay stuck in life because they refuse to take FREE English classes! Yes a lot of higher job positions that make more money require English fluency.

Kaine wasn't governor and senator from Virginia because he speaks Spanish. That's just a nice bonus.

No duh but Clintons rat like behavior thinks she needs that bonus for Latino support.

And who paid for Kaine's Caribbean vacations? Why is he not charged?

I suspect this will be an issue for him..

Well according to SCOTUS, this is ok.

By this standard Trump should talk jive and ebonics to lock in the elder black and younger black vote

How is it offensive? It's one of the reasons she chose him. She wants the vote of the recent immigrants.

Does Hillary speaking English make her a shoo-in for you? Hispanics and Latinos pay attention to issues, too. People act like "OH HE SPEAKS SPANISH!" like that's all it takes to get that population to the polls. OLA! =/= votes

To the extent that anyone is saying that, I agree that is ridiculous. It does make a nice contrast to the Mexican rapist/build a wall and make them pay for it theme from the other side however.

Yes that is why they pick him...he speaks Spanish. Did you see Hillay grinning and laughing as he spoke. It was a slap down(Kaine being the anti-thesis Bernie's ideology)of the Bernie bros(even though over 1/2 of the younger Bernie supporters are women- nice demeaning term for anyone who supports Bernie) and a slap to the Latino/Hispanic voters(oh like this white male know your struggle he speaks Spanish!).

What are you babbling about? Kaine is a good choice on multiple fronts.

I get that the Trump supporters are trying to drive a wedge between Clinton-Kaine and the Sanders supporters, but Trump-Pence will never appeal to more than a very small fraction of them.

I am the poster who said it was offensive. I am not a Trump supporter. Good god no. And I like Kaine, he is the first thing that has gotten me excited about this election season. I wish I could cast a vote for him for president. But all the glee over him speaking Spanish so that means they will pull the Latino vote is distasteful.

Hillary Clinton has made her pick - Tim Kaine.
A senator, former Virginia governor and mayor of Richmond, he hails from a top battleground state and, as a fluent Spanish speaker, could help in another: Florida
Kaine was born in Minnesota and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, where he often worked in his father's welding shop, but he came to Virginia after meeting his wife Anne Holton at Harvard.
They have three children; their eldest son, Nat, is a Marine. Daughter Annella is a theater major at New York University, but not much is known about their youngest son Woody.

In June, Kaine acknowledged he failed to disclose that his stay at a Spanish resort was paid by a nonprofit tied to a lobbying firm. Kaine had helped organize and attended a conference in September 2014 hosted by the U.S.-Spain Council, a group that works to cement political and business ties between the two nations.
Kaine, who is the nonprofit's honorary chairman, later told The Associated Press that Senate ethics staffers advised his own staff that the council should cover his costs.
As governor, Kaine accepted more than $160,000 in gifts and paid travel, according to state reports. The gifts were legal under the state's permissive ethics rules, but his willingness to accept them could become an issue during the presidential campaign.
Among those gifts was $2,000 in travel paid by Dominion for meetings of two national governors' conferences and to watch George Mason University's basketball team play in the NCAA Final Four in 2006.
Those niceties are legal under Virginia's extremely permissive ethics rules, but that didn't stop Donald Trump from calling Kaine 'corrupt.'

And? What does this have to with that I said upthread? Will recap for the slow comprehenders:

Spanish language skills do not automatically mean Latino/Hispanic voters

I like Kaine, he makes pulling the lever for Hillary less distasteful.

I was never voting for Trump. Not ever.

Anymore questions?

Tim Kaine has an A rating from Planned Parenthood, so pro-lfe he's not.

He also led the dem walk out re: Netanyahu's speech. That speaks volumes

Between Kaine & Pence, there is just no question who would be the better president. Pence is so out of his league. He does nothing but sit next to Donald and nod. Kaine on the other hand is someone who could get the job done. I'm going to vote Hill/Kaine now with no regrets.

Pence's life story is of a man who aligned himself with an inward-looking tribe - white, right-wing, Evangelical Christians - who disapprove of large segments of American society. He may be devout, but so too are many ultra-Orthodox Jews and Wahhabi Muslims. The man is as ill-suited to assume the responsibilities of the Presidency as Trump, albeit for different reasons.

Kaine's life story is of a classic "seeker" who constantly sought to expand his horizons and engage with others - traveling to different parts of the world, learning a different language, moving to a different part of the country than the one where he grew up. He understands America because he isn't afraid of it like Pence.

Well said. That speech was such a breath of fresh air -- optimistic, inclusive, service-oriented.

Well, he is pro-choice in his professional life. So, no one ever said he was pro-life - he just doesn't believe in abortion personally.

The Netanyahu speech was a nasty slap in the face to the administration. No to mention, Bibi is a jackass. So, bravo.

It's not so much that he spoke Spanish as what he said in Spanish. He didn't say he loved taco bowls and cinco de mayo. He said we are all Americans.

Love it. I also like the fact that he's been married to the same woman for 32 years and that she's not a pouty bimbo.

It's not just that he speaks Spanish and therefore the Latinos are a lock for the Dems. He speaks Spanish and LIVED IN A Spanish speaking country for a year doing community service. He lived and worked WITH Spanish speaking people on their terms, in their culture. When you immerse yourself in another culture, in service to the people of that culture, you show a genuine interest in and learn to appreciate the nuances of that culture. THAT's why it matters that he speaks Spanish.

It wouldn't be the same if he simply studied Spanish in college for 4 years. He sees Latino people as real people with hopes and dreams and actual HUMAN WORTH.

I did a similar volunteer corp program in the inner city. You can't help but gain an understanding of people when you live with and serve them.
