It's not just that he speaks Spanish and therefore the Latinos are a lock for the Dems. He speaks Spanish and LIVED IN A Spanish speaking country for a year doing community service. He lived and worked WITH Spanish speaking people on their terms, in their culture. When you immerse yourself in another culture, in service to the people of that culture, you show a genuine interest in and learn to appreciate the nuances of that culture. THAT's why it matters that he speaks Spanish.

It wouldn't be the same if he simply studied Spanish in college for 4 years. He sees Latino people as real people with hopes and dreams and actual HUMAN WORTH.

I did a similar volunteer corp program in the inner city. You can't help but gain an understanding of people when you live with and serve them.

Exactamente

This. Duh. He is not being praised for knowing how to conjugate Spanish verb tenses.

He also led the dem walk out re: Netanyahu's speech. That speaks volumes

Whoa!

Well, he is pro-choice in his professional life. So, no one ever said he was pro-life - he just doesn't believe in abortion personally.

The Netanyahu speech was a nasty slap in the face to the administration. No to mention, Bibi is a jackass. So, bravo.

That's pro-choice

If you hate Israel, yes.

I don't hate Israel, but I certainly despise Netanyahu. Are we to understand they are one and the same? If so, I guess I would need to reconsider my attitudes towards Israel.

ah, you're like dubya - not much with nuance, huh?

This isn't black and white. There are plenty of people, including politicians, who are personally against abortion, but understand that there are reasons why it is a necessary procedure in our society.

And lots of people can sympathize with the Israelis....and not agree with some of the stuff that the Israeli gov't has done. Shit, I don't agree with everything our gov't has done - does that mean I hate America? Wait, you probably think so....but, I assure you the answer is actually NO.

Kaine wasn't governor and senator from Virginia because he speaks Spanish. That's just a nice bonus.

No duh but Clintons rat like behavior thinks she needs that bonus for Latino support.

You mean, kind of like McCain pandering to women with Palin? Was McCain a rat?

So, HRC should pick someone who wouldn't draw in Latinos?

It was distasteful of him to pick palin. HRC couldnt come up with a "si se puede" slogan like obama did whom a lot of democratic latinos feel lied so she chose a vp to give her a one up. Sly and rat like.

Did you know there are millions of white people who speak Spanish because they were born in South American countries??

So what is it that despise about Netanyahu? What specific positions do you oppose? One point he brought up was that the UN gave Iran a seat on the Women's Rights Council. I believe that to be a very bad decision that speaks volumes about the UN. You?

I consider terrorism to be one of the first and foremost problems in today's world. Netanyahu does too. Obama does not. Most of Congress does not. That speech was more than necessary.

Classic DCUM - none of this has anything to do with his speech. It's always entertaining to leave a forum for a few days and come back to see what has happened to it. It's NEVER still on point. Start a new thread to debate Israel and abortion.

Tim Kaine led the walk-out in congress re: Netanyahu's speech. That's very on-point

Those are bonus points for Tim Kaine. Netanyahu was a complete ass during that episode and deserved to be ignored.
