If DC applies to Emory or Georgia Tech, will confederate flags be flying?

The Wahington and Lee/ Christopher Newport threads just got me stressed, as that is even further south

I am sorry your question is being met with such scorn. Of course it is a legitimate question for someone who has not traveled to the deep south, particularly someone who is a minority. Some people here seem to be a tad defensive.

That said, I have never spent much time in Atlanta, but I have some AA friends who think it is fabulous. Emory is known as a very diverse school. I don't know anything about GA Tech.

Atlanta is a hot, very inexpensive, relatively clean version of New York. OP, worry not.

GA Tech is in the heart of Atlanta and draws an ethnically and culturally diverse crowd. My husband attended there and loved it - he made friends from many different countries and backgrounds.

Emory is a pretty progresive school.

No need to worry about Confederate flags

I moved here from Atlanta (but I'm not a Southerner). We lived across the street from Emory. All of our babysitters were from Emory (some from Georgia and some from elsewhere in US)

Emory is an incredible school. Campus is gorgeous. Students are intelligent and we found it to be a wonderful campus environment. Students are from all over the US so I would not worry about it being too Southern. Additionally, it is located in Decatur which is probably one of the most liberal towns in the US. The number of people who live in the town who vote Democrat is probably in the 70-75% range.

Georgia Tech will feel a bit more Southern than Emory but I'm not sure it would be something to worry about (and I say this as someone who would avoid anywhere that felt too "Southern"). I am not as familiar with the students. As a Liberal, I probably would not select GA Tech but I'm really no expert on this school and my decision wouldn't really be because I think it's too Southern. I don't love the location of the school and Emory's campus is so impressive that it would be an easy choice for me.

If you go outside the Perimeter (Rte 285), it gets scary very fast. There will be bumper stickers that say '"Northerners - Go Home." There were lots of George W stickers and many said, "Our President is a cowboy - Yeehah!"

As a student, they are not going to these areas. Atlanta is a lovely city and very progressive. The area where Emory is has the CDC, VA Hospital and Emory Univ and Hospital. It is a very educated and progressive environment.

Of course it is a legitimate question. I am not in any way comparing Atlanta to Oxford, MS. In fact, Atlanta feels more integrated and comfortable in its own skin than our beloved hometown of Washington, DC. But, all you have to do is pick up the newspaper regularly to know that overt signs of racism have been displayed - with clear malicious intent - as recently as a few weeks ago at Ole Miss. I wouldn't send my kid to Ole Miss in a million years (it might take that long for them to join the modern world). The OP is just inquiring if these same attitudes extend a mere 300 miles east to Georgia. Any thoughtful and sensitive person would want to know the same.

I think it is a legit question. Cultures vary between schools and history/region still probably plays a role. Went to UVA in the 90s and IMO there was a certain southern/prep/frat feel to the culture / social scene. Visited some friends at Maryland at the time and the feel was a lot different.

That was around 20 years ago and I would have guessed things have changed a lot but when reading about the Huguely murder a few years back, there were many aspects of the descriptions of the UVA culture / social scene that did not sound much different. Not saying that the culture typically involves violence - just the types of things they did, the families, the way they interacted. Had some good experiences at UVA, but it is a plus to feel comfortable with the dominant social culture of a place and it is worth considering.

Not sure what your thought process is in choosing schools here, but those schools have very different identities and curriculums. Emory is a world class liberal arts/medical/research university in the heart of ATL.

GT is a world class engineering/architecture/science research school. My dad, GT EE', used to claim that MIT was a safety school for kids who could not get into Tech. (wink). GT is a classic state school within the ACC, football, basketball, greek life etc. The campus is downtown and while not Charlottesville, or Athens, it is urban and funky.

There are not a lot of students that would be comfortable at both.

My DC is thinking of a possible career in medical research, which is why any school with a strong science department (not aiming for engineering) is currently under consideration. Definitely will need to look more closely, but Biochem major at Emory may not be humongously different from biochem major at GT...thought was to find a school at which DC is socially comfortable, not excessively stressed, but can't party away the first 4 yrs of undergrad...lol. Really looking for a school where most youngsters finish in fewer than 5 yrs, too

Cannot believe this thread. Emory is easily as Jewish as BU or Northwestern. The University supports its own shopping mall, for pete's sake. One of Emory's profs is the founding rabbi of Young Israel Temple of Atlanta. Check out http://shalomatlantamap.com/ . Is the original post real?

it is quite real. When I look at demographic information on the website there is no breakdown of Jewish vs nonjewish. It discusses race not religion. So I am happy to get info on the religious diversity from people who have attended or know students.

And btw what does jewishness have to do with supporting shopping malls?
