| We are headed there in a couple weeks. I'd appreciate hearing others' impressions, too. It is really hard to get a handle on schools where you don't know anyone who has or recently had kids enrolled. |
I know a lot who didn't love it. Why is OP an idiot? I would be very concerned. I went to college in Atlanta so I know that Emory is pretty liberal. Tech is probably fine, but if I wasn't familiar, I would be concerned. |
Because it is. Unless the bearer is referring to a heritage of hate. In which case it's still bullshit, just for a different reason. |
Ha!! |
Aren't they, though? The flags are offensive, too. |
It's definitely a message of racism, even when they try to deny it. Please. |
| Racism or willful ignorance. Either way it shows a low level of appreciation of impact on others. |
|
Honestly, it's not that ignorant of a question.
Yes - it's ridiculous to think that Emory will have that many ignorant Southerners. However, 15-20 minutes from Emory is where a lot of the Confederate Flag flyers live. As someone who lived in Atlanta for years, there really are bumpers stickers that say, "Northerners go home!" That said, Emory is lovely and students are not going out into the areas where they will encounter these problems. Atlanta and Decatur are progressive and Liberal areas where this would not be tolerated. Drive outside the "perimeter" though and this Confederate flag flying business is not going to be uncommon. Normal people do not go to these areas. There are plenty of great places to go so it's not a concern. |
|
But you say nothing of downtown Atlanta, and the area around, say, Georgia Tech and other neighborhoods that are not so nice.
Because that wouldn't be progressive or liberal to point out, now would it. Be careful, your intolerance is showing.... |
I found her attitude snobby and elite. I think it was just her nature - she's from the Northeast (as am I). Statements like 'I never expected to STAY in Atlanta' rubbed me the wring way. The student ambassador was excellent. |
I'm a new englander from a middle class background (definitely not elite) who came to virginia for college 30 years ago. The culture shock for me was fierce. Trust me when I say I never, never expected to stay. ~shrug~ Things change. |
Oh geez - I guess Liberals scare you as much as neighborhoods that have black people. Not everyone is as closed minded. And yes - I am intolerant of the narrow minded racists who think areas that have any non whites are scary. The world is moving in that direction too so be careful. However, I will explain why I didn't comment on Georgia Tech. I didn't mention Georgia Tech because I'm not familiar with the campus. Apparently I'm supposed to make something up and comment that there are a lot of black people living in Atlanta and that Conservatives are scared of them so that's a reason for others to be scared too. Since I'm not scare of black people, I assumed there were others like me. Sorry about that! I lived in Atlanta and never had a reason to go anywhere near Georgia Tech so I'm not going to warn anyone about it. I have NO idea what it's like. I'm sure someone who has more information can give their opinion. That said, I do know a lot about the area around Emory so I thought I could add value. I didn't realize it was an all or nothing rule here. My guess is that the OP wanted helpful comments and that is what I was trying to provide. My observations are real. Your comments are just an opportunity for you to release all of your frustration that racists like you are a dying breed. |
What do you mean "normal people do not go into these areas?" |
|
I graduated from UGA in 1993. Very few incidents of overt racism. I love the school and wouldn't trade it for anything. I am AA woman.
Also knew many AA from Georgia Tech & Emory. Great schools and they had little problems. They loved it also. To be clear, there have been reports of mini non Southern University with racial tension. What matters is how the university handles it and how the students recover after any major incident. That is the case everywhere. High School workplace life. |
| I meant "many" not "mini". Lol. Using microphone. |
