If DC applies to Emory or Georgia Tech, will confederate flags be flying?

Sorry, Virginia retired "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" in 1997. It is now the state song emeritus. Florida replaced Suwannee River with Florida, Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky as the state anthem in 2008. Suwannee River is still one of the state's official songs, though the word darky has been dropped in the official version.

Ugh, this kind of thing drives me nuts. Of course not.

The thing is .... if you want racist idiots, you can stay right here in the DC area and find plenty. Racial tension is all over the place.

I'm not sahing there's none in the south of course, but you can't assume that those universities will be bastions of confederate sympathizers! Because of course they are not.

Love the syntax. Yes, as your child hits "send" on the electronic application, maintenance workers throughout the south will pull out the flags and fly them. They've been waiting for you.

You are arguing against a straw man of your own making.

No one is saying there isn't racial tension "all over the place." But if you think that Atlanta, GA doesn't have a different past AND present with regard to race relations than, for example, Ann Arbor, MI or Madison, WI, then you are flat out delusional.

What an ignorant question. Atlanta is an extremely diverse city and both schools are very diverse.

Emory is an incredible school. Campus is gorgeous. Students are intelligent and we found it to be a wonderful campus environment. Students are from all over the US so I would not worry about it being too Southern. Additionally, it is located in Decatur which is probably one of the most liberal towns in the US. The number of people who live in the town who vote Democrat is probably in the 70-75% range.

Georgia Tech will feel a bit more Southern than Emory but I'm not sure it would be something to worry about (and I say this as someone who would avoid anywhere that felt too "Southern"). I am not as familiar with the students. As a Liberal, I probably would not select GA Tech but I'm really no expert on this school and my decision wouldn't really be because I think it's too Southern. I don't love the location of the school and Emory's campus is so impressive that it would be an easy choice for me.

If you go outside the Perimeter (Rte 285), it gets scary very fast. There will be bumper stickers that say '"Northerners - Go Home." There were lots of George W stickers and many said, "Our President is a cowboy - Yeehah!"

As a student, they are not going to these areas. Atlanta is a lovely city and very progressive. The area where Emory is has the CDC, VA Hospital and Emory Univ and Hospital. It is a very educated and progressive environment.

I've never seen a bumper sticker like that in my life and I grew up outside of Atlanta. The majority of people in the Atlanta suburbs are from another part of the country, including the northeast. Also cowboys aren't a southern thing at all. That's Texas. So not sure why anyone in Atlanta would want to comment about the president being a cowboy, unless they just moved from Texas.

It's very obvious from your question that you aren't well traveled. Not saying that in a mean way but just stating the obvious.

Depends on what you mean by "diverse." If you mean "diverse" as used in the context of affirmative action, then, yes, extremely diverse. If you mean "diverse" as in diverse, then not so much. Pretty much black and white: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Atlanta

Isn't the OP AA? GT and Emory have students from all over the world and the country. Yes, ATlanta is mostly black and white but I think we can all agree it's more diverse than Charlottesville, Denver, Ithaca, Austinc etc.
