One thing that struck me about OP's post - as a means for her children to cope with their upcoming minority status, she suggests that she'll encourage them to become active when they see a civil rights violation (presumably because it could happen to them someday). That fact that opposing civil rights violations is just the right thing to do apparently isn't sufficient - there's gotta be some personal benefit. Urk. I vote for a childhood head injury, PP.
