William & Mary Cypher

Nothing to add. Just wanted to thank this board for the information. Now, we wait....

The board of visitors last week was informed that applications increased by about 3.5% this year, with even more dramatic increases in ED1 (7%) and ED2 (17%). They are probably running a bit behind this year with all of the additional deferrals in the RD pool so I wouldn't stress too much.

Thanks for the heads up! My kid here is trying to wait patiently!

Our kid got one in 2023. I thought it was very cool.

Good luck. W&M was my son's first college tour and it was the metric by which he measured every other school. He did not get in as a Freshman but applied as a transfer, and got in as a Sophomore. He's about as happy as one can get there. Perfect fit for him.

DD is still waiting for her decision but was looking through the class of 2030 commits account and was surprised by how sporty/preppy/Greek interested all of the admitted students seemed to be - it seemed like almost every single person was either planning to rush or big on going out or into playing 3-4 sports. It wasn't what we were expecting based on what we read on here.

What a lot of posters want you to believe William and Mary is vs the reality of how it is is very different in my opinion. Students are smart and do work hard, but they are very involved in campus life from typical things like Greek life to very niche interests.

PP: I was expecting there to definitely be somewhat of a gap but DD and I felt like this could have easily been UVA or Wake's commits page. We scrolled back to look at last year's posts and it felt like there was a difference in the "types" of students posting just between the two years. But I guess only early decision isn't a lot to go off of. Was just mildly surprised.

I think those are the kids who are just more likely to post on Instagram immediately. I’m on campus almost every day and there’s still a whole lot of quirk around. (And I don’t mean that in a bad way.)

A girl my kids grew up with is living her best life at W&M. She is very mainstream pretty and smart, but has never been able to fit into the popular crowd socially. Not really sure why. She tried and struggled so much. I don’t know if she is what DCUM calls quirky, but she just isn’t teenager “cool.” I don’t know how else to describe her. My DC always said she was nice, but really annoying or “a know it all.” She is now president of her sorority at W&M and super happy. This is what people mean when they say quirky kids thrive there.

PP: I thought that at first but when DD and I compared to the posts from last year it was a pretty big difference. Significant increase in posts from sporty/preppy/Greek-interested girls, very few posts from girls outside that umbrella. There are probably 5x as many people just who have mentioned rushing. Especially since we're only on early decision, why would the average person posting be so different from last year?

It isn’t different.

Pushed submit too soon! There are tons of mainstream kids at W&M and have been for years. This board reflects the school twenty years or more ago. I wouldn’t say the typical kid there is the same as the predominant kid at UVA, though. My kid got into both but preferred W&M in part because she felt the kids were nicer, less strivery, and more into being genuine and part of a community. She is a freshman and in a sorority and other activities and has had a great experience so far.
