Public universities are selective and not compulsory, so you have a population of engaged students and you choose your classes and major. Unlike high school where it’s whomever lives in bounds of your local high school, and a certain percentage don’t want to be there or want to cause mischief. |
Cal State tuition is $7500 for the year |
UMD is T50 and charges $10K annually. I'm sure this comment of mine will bring out the trolls turning their noses up at UMD... |
| Lots of Georgia parents send their kids to private high school and then enjoy a nice break when their kid goes to public U in GA and gets free tuition thanks to Zell Miller/Hope. |
We could have done private for $13K/year but that would have been with Tuition Exchange. But, yeah, merit at certain privates can bring the cost down to the in-instate public level. |
| Look, we know state colleges are a lot cheaper. What's surprising is that OP say a "top" state school. Lots of posters are throwing out bullshit state colleges charging these prices. They're not "top." |
They aren’t compulsory but the vast majority aren’t selective and there are plenty of college kids that don’t care much about class…more than you will find in very high performing public high schools. |
Not really…at least not the top private high schools. Nearly 88% of Lovett and Westminster grads attend college OOS. I don’t think they care much about tuition breaks. |
well, it's ranked as the 17th best public school. below rutgers. so, yea, not "top.' |
UW is "top." |
Yup. "Great public university system" that costs $$$$$. |
Well…UCB (and UCLA and all the UC schools) is only $7250 a semester. |
Worth every penny. |
Still cheaper than private in many cases. |
It’s not surprising. Here are tuition and fees for this year at a few of the cheaper “top” publics: UF: $6,380 UNC: $9,096 UT-Austin: $10,858-13,576 UCLA: $15,700 And several others in this range that are good though maybe more debatable about being top, including some of the other UCs, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, UMD, and Purdue. |
