My god.
I just paid the tuition for my college freshman's fall semester at his (top) public. It was just shy of 6k. This feels like pennies after what I have been paying for my oldest's tuition per semester at their private (just shy of 35k.) It is shocking now that it is real. And I am glad the situation was not reversed. |
| $6k for college?? Where is this college? |
| We did private to public in VA and it’s been wonderful. Thanks for choosing in-state public, kids! |
| What “top” public only charges 6k per semester? |
I'm guessing that 6k is tuition only, not room and board? |
Even then |
| Univ of Washington charges $12k a year for in-state tuition. OOS is $43k. |
| My kid started at a public and transferred to a private. That was a tough one. More than double the cost. |
So, I took a guess. UNC in-state is $3,500 a semester for tuition, about $1K in the fees (per semester) Public school tuition in NC is pretty cheap. (NC native, here). Even OOS isn't sinfully high. This doesn't include housing or meals. |
| OP here - my numbers don't include room and board for either school. |
NP. Wow, I had no idea! God do I feel like a sucker as I contemplate paying tuition for OOS publics. |
Why glad the situation was not reversed (i.e., pay $6k for k-12 and then $35k for 4 years)? I assume your kid would have ended up at this college if you had just done public k-12. |
| I understand. The only two days I regret my kid's private uni choice are the two days when I send the checks. $33K twice a year. Ouch. |
UMD is about that in state, |
| That is absolutely incredible. The tuition at my publics is $16,00- 20,000!! Just tuition. Room and board another $13-15,000. This is why I’m always saying privates are cheaper if you get merit. I pay less than $10,000 a year with room board thrown in. |
