Sure, someone will want the jobs. Why is why I don’t think central office cares that there is an exodus of teachers and counselors. |
Are the new teachers, counselors, and administrators experienced? For example, if you are hiring a math teacher for calculus, have they ever taught calculus before? If they hire a new counselor, do they have high school experience with all the ins and outs about college applications? If they hire a new administrator, do they have any experience in a leadership role, or are they first time administrators. Just because you can fill the job does not mean that all is well. That being said, we will need to wait and see. |
I am sure there will be more than 27 before school starts….. |
I think they take what they can get as long as they are certified by Maryland. DD was taught Calculus by a teacher who hadn't taught it in 20 years and told us at back to school night that he would be re-learning it along with his students. She and other students were constantly going to the math resource teacher for reteaching and regrading-for real! |
And somehow MCPS thinks it can replicate Blair STEM magnet across five other different regions. They can't find enough qualified calc teachers, let alone mvc teachers. |
What’s happening there? |
Leadership that doesn’t show care or regard for staff. |
Thinking of applying for a math position there. Any insight? |
No insider insight, just the fact that many staff members have left Wootton in the past year - many for lateral moves so not for a promotion. I would be concerned that so many Resource Teachers, assistant principals, and counselors have left. They work very closely with administration. It could be a sign. |
I was the OP of this thread. Interesting that DS turned out to have accurate info. He said he was told by a teacher who was among those leaving. Sadly, his beloved counselor has now also left. She was amazing! I think he’s more bothered by this loss then the others as he’s a rising senior and didn’t expect it.
The new principal is excellent so I’m surprised so many chose to leave. It probably didn’t help that they waited so long to make the announcement. |
Did that many people leave because of the uncertainty of not knowing who the new principal would be? |
I have no idea but I suspect that could have been a factor. Things were a mess under the old principal who was replaced with an interim principal Dr Bostic. I assume most staff gave notice without knowing the interim principal would be made permanent. |
Many staff are unhappy with Dr. Bostic - there’s a lot of talk that isn’t backed up by action. The union was heavily involved this spring to try to mediate. Examples: 1. Spring testing and AP exams were a significant problem, with nothing done to adjust and make it better even though teachers and department chairs gave many suggestions. 2. Teachers were not told what they would be teaching next year until the last day of school. At that point in the year, many positions at other schools were already posted and filled, leaving little time to make moves if teachers were unhappy with what courses they were given. |
DS was a pass runner for the counseling office, so take with a grain of salt. He said it became a hang out spot for kids who didn’t want to go to class. They would order Door Dash, goof around. When counselors would send them to class, kids said they were racist. So admin told them they weren’t allowed to send kids back to class and to let them hang out. Kids bragged that they could just write a letter calling a teacher racist and get them fired. |
Maybe now that Dr. Bostic is there, this will end? |
