Great point. Forgot how close those fields are to some of those houses. |
You never remember until they are blasting in your face. Ask willowsford how much they enjoy Hanson's lights especially with day light savings now. It's a nightmare |
This made my day,

This is exactly the issue at Hooes. You can find it online at the county website if you go look up permits and public meetings. Several years ago, SYC sent it around to parents at the club asking for us to support when the lights were going up. The surrounding homeowners were furious and the county ultimately approved for only 1 field. https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/planning-development/hooes-road-park |
| Ask SYC director about the lights at Hooes. She will let you know it cost xxx to install the lights, hence only one side has lights and the other doesn't. It is very sad when you have teams practicing in the dark. |
| Also, should add Hooes is used for the younger kids and for Rec. Maybe lower on their priority list. |
I'm not finding that to be the case. I have teens (not young kids)-one left in HS--and I have found the communication and use of playmatrix top-notch. They have been timely about game changes, etc. |
Hooes cares |
My kid used to practice in the dark at Simpson when he was younger with Alexandria while the top team got the section of Simpson with the lights. lol We had this issue at a lot of places--boys and girls in different Clubs. Williamsburg with Arlington also gets problematic w/out lights when daylight savings rolls around--and shuffling happens there too. |
Yes, agree with this. |
Yes, it happens. Clubs here do not have the infrastructure of academies, but they make it work. |

2nd team on girls side. They hired a fantastic coach from another club. Best one team has had. Communication has been good. Fields are sometimes crowded, but not always. Really depends on day/time.
Uniforms are terrible, which the club knows. I do wish the RAMP program was included in cost and all kids could do it, not just GA. I wish there was more of a link between GA and 2nd team and seeing kids. Rosters are too big this year - 17-18 kids. Some kids added after summer, in-season, which sucks for kids on team because they are getting less playing time. Overall, so far, a great year. Have been there a number of years and this is the best so far. |
As an SYC GA parent, RAMP is offered but it's also not included in our costs. Have to pay per session if wanting to attend, which I'm not sure it's worth the price and hopefully they figure something out with that. |
I'm on the board of a different sports organization in Fairfax County, and let me tell you the county is terrible about helping youth sports leagues (just look at old meeting minutes for the Fairfax County Athletic Council). We have 2 fields regularly permitted to us that we fought to get approval for lights at. 5 years later the approval has happened but there are still no lights. |
Sounds about right. FFX compared to PWC or Arlington has to be a challenge to promote youth sports. I've been to many different fields in the area and it doesn't matter the organization, they have to split the fields between a LOT of different programs. One big thing is most fields lose access to FXA right at 9pm I've noticed for whichever sport that have going. |
