28 yr DC resident and this just about sums it up. There was a time when this was not explicitly true and we had a couple mayoral administrations who actually seemed to want to make the city a great place to live instead of a boondoggle. But that era appears to be over and I don't see another one on the horizon. Everyone currently in charge (Bowser, the Council, heads of most major agencies) seems more than happy with this arrangement. |
I have absolutely seen the impact of the efforts by MPD. I drive through Adams Morgan to get home to Columbia Heights every afternoon. Beginning in April, the moped riders appeared out of nowhere. My stress level went through the roof as riders crossed against red lights and wove in and out of heavy traffic. Then in June there was a crackdown and almost 200 bikes were carted away on a flatbed. I saw the impact immediately. On the same ride home, I might have encountered 10 mopeds in a 5 block stretch. Now it’s down to 2. It’s not perfect, but it’s progress. |
| The guys on mopeds have replaced bicyclists as the biggest a-holes on the road. |
The point is that the moped drivers don't have the ability to obliterate an entire family as does the operator of a four ton murder machine. But continue telling yourself that they do. |
+1000 The only traffic laws that are enforced are ones that can be enforced by traffic cameras. Good news for mopeds and drunk drivers and bicyclists and stoned drivers and anyone who hides their license plate number or who simply decides that they don't want to have a license plate. |
Oh is that the standard you invented? Pretty dumb argument but as a factual matter, someone one on a moped could of course wipe out a family in a crosswalk. If you hit your head on the cement, all bets are off. |
To the extent they’re replacing cars, mopeds are 100% better. And I don’t in fact see them violating traffic laws where I am. |

Police enforcement took place on June 5. Here’s video. It’s still going on.

Murder machines! This silly rhetoric really misleads people about what is actually happening. Lets look at some official government stats, shall we? In 2022, there were: -a grand total of 17 people in Washington DC who were killed by car drivers -nearly as many deaths, 15, were blamed on bicyclist/pedestrian/scooter errors -there were 203 homicides |
Those 15 bikers/pedestrians would be alive if they make their “error” with a moped instead of a car. |
| Many DC moped drivers are here illegally. |
| I got yelled at by one on the bike trail in Arlington yesterday. |
| If Trump is elected, throw the moped men into the mass deportation. |
Weird how even when it's not the car driver's fault, it's still the car driver's fault. There was a recent accident in which one person on an e-bike drove into another person on an e-bike and one of them was killed. Still a car driver's fault, though, right? |
Do you not understand that a car is inherently more deadly than a moped? |
