What’s up with all the sketchy moped drivers?

The point is that the moped drivers don't have the ability to obliterate an entire family as does the operator of a four ton murder machine. But continue telling yourself that they do.

Murder machines! This silly rhetoric really misleads people about what is actually happening. Lets look at some official government stats, shall we?

In 2022, there were:

-a grand total of 17 people in Washington DC who were killed by car drivers

-nearly as many deaths, 15, were blamed on bicyclist/pedestrian/scooter errors

-there were 203 homicides

With all these crazy moped drivers, only a matter of time before traffic deaths blamed on people who aren't in cars will exceed those blamed on motorists.

What part of physics do you not understand? In an accident the car is inherently at fault for increased severity of injury due to size/speed. If mopeds replaced cars, there would be many fewer injuries and deaths.

Every accident is different, and it's up to the police to investigate the specific circumstances in each one, and determine who is at fault.

Their most recent data shows more than 40 percent of fatal traffic accidents in Washington DC are the fault of pedestrians and cyclists and scooters.

If you have a problem with that, then maybe you should take it up with them.

But since you obviously don't know the first thing about what happened in any of these incidents, maybe just shut the *uck up?

What, the scooters are riding into open manholes and dying? Bicyclists are riding into buildings and dying? There is some mysterious force that executes pedestrians when they stray beyond some white paint? So what is happening to them?

I was driving and someone on a moped tried to pass me on the left while I was making a left hand turn. I would have run into him over if I hadn't slammed on the breaks. But, yeah, you're right, as a driver, I should anticipated that the moped would have made the insanest, most illogical possible decision.

These drivers pay no respect to traffic laws and many have no actual license. It’s just been a weird trend in the last few years. Glad the city is cracking down.

Let's just keep in mind that DC is a place where people make left turns from right turn lanes, pass people in parking/turn lanes, drive on the shoulder of the highway (at least until they put in bollards on some stretches), and think that 10 over the speed limit isn't "speeding." Scooters are hardly ruining a driving utopia. They are just a different flavor of crazy.

I was at a four way stop a recent morning. It was rush hour and there were cars waiting to go in each direction. It was one person's turn to go, when suddenly a bicyclist *with a child on back* went around the line of cars in his lane and plowed through the intersection at full speed. The driver whose turn it was to go (in the perpendicular lane) had to slam on its brakes to avoid killing them. If he hadn't, they would have been dead. The driver was very angry and laid on the horn. Guess what? The bicyclist was *offended* at being honked at. It was unbelievable. It's amazing there aren't more cyclists killed in this city. They do some really dumb and dangerous stuff.

Arrest the parent for child endangerment.

You have never driven in Caracas, nevertheless been there.

I'm the prior prior poster. I have not personally driven in Caracas but I have been driven around to business appointments. Drivers in Caracas don't even pull over for ambulances. It was sad. I have done business in Caracas. Venezuela is a failing country. All of my clients had large bank accounts in the US and owned properties in Miami. They also had private security services to prevent kidnapping.

Which is why in fact a lot of the Venezuelans of all SES have fled here - and figured out how to exploit a market niche (moped delivery) and also how to conduct themselves more or less to avoid getting into trouble by following traffic laws. The root of OP’s post (that they are “sketchy” scofflaws) is factually incorrect. They’re following traffic laws as much/more than cars and likely a net safety improvement in that they replace car trips.

Thanks. Did your source for that also say “trust me, bro.” after they relayed the information to you?

These folks are getting their mopeds impounded. I have also been cut off by them and it’s fking sketchy. So yea, they are sketchy drivers wearing bike helmets and basically zooming around without much care. But you can continue to spread bullsht in the name of altruism.

Oh noes, poor car driver got “cut off” (ie actually has to look where he’s driving.)

Hahaha!!!! So true!!!

I’m going to use this the next time some whiny Lycra clad loser complains about me opening my door to get out while they’re riding towards me.

They simply have to look where they’re riding to avoid being door’d!

I work in Gallery Place and have almost been hit by one of these guys on K Street just north of Gallery. The guy ran a red light and turned left into a group of pedestrians. I do occasionally see cops parked at 5th and K, but when they are not there the moped drivers do whatever they want. I am not against making a living but am against driving into a group of pedestrians or driving on the sidewalk.

The difference is that a car would kill all of them; a moped, much less likely. I watch traffic carefully and have not see the moped drivers (the Latino delivery drivers) ignore traffic lights but did almost get creamed by a driver turning on a red arrow yesterday.

Well I have seen it many, many times all over downtown. They’re a menace to pedestrians.

Also, as someone who has had to go to ER after hitting my head in an accidental fall on the street in DC, I cannot even imagine how much it hurts to get hit by a moped, even one going 10-15 mph. It is absolutely not a minor thing to drive a moped toward pedestrians who are in a crosswalk.

If you think getting hit by a moped will really hurt you, you should try getting hit by a two ton SUV.

I was knocked down by a bike rider while stepping into a crosswalk with the “walk” light on. Vehicle traffic had already stopped for the light. I stepped into the crosswalk and she hit me from the left at full speed. Knocked me off my feet into the air. I landed on the ground and fractured my coccyx and bruised my hip so badly I had to go on blood thinners for 4 months. The bike rider - a white woman in her 30’s - she cussed at me and then got back on her bike and fled away. This is how white people on bikes do.

So it was basically a hit and run.

Bicyclists should be required to have license plates, and carry insurance, just like motorists.

Chances are this was reported as a "pedestrian error" on the police report if there was one. Therefore, the cyclist did nothing wrong. Using driver logic that is.
