The golden age of American Jews is ending

Thanks for proving the point of the article, anti-semites.

If being against genocide makes me an antisemite, so be it.

If Israel were attempting to commit genocide, why would they warn Gazans of where they're going to bomb, and advise them to move out of that area?

If Nazis attempted to commit genocide, why did they advise Jews to move out of Germany, and create ghettos where Jews could live?

This is before they hit on their Final Solution.

This article and the comments here (and on other threads here) are disheartening. People can never seem to say: antisemitism is wrong and American Jews should not be targeted. Same on instagram. It's always "but what about Gaza, what about evil zionost colonizers?" even on a simple post about someone being called a dirty Jew or assaulted.

Anti-Semitism on the right and the left threatens to bring to a close an unprecedented period of safety and prosperity for Jewish Americans—and demolish the liberal order they helped establish.

Very interesting

I tried to read the article but only got through the introduction. As a person of Middle Eastern descent who was a high schooler during 9-11, the behaviour of the kids in school in the article was wildly familiar… except neither I nor my parents considered it a threat to my safety or an existential threat. Kids are just idiots.

There are elements on the left taking it to the extreme, as always, but taking a stance against Israel does not mean being anti-Semitic. I think due to the atrocities in Gaza people are expressing an opinion they kept to themselves for decades: we are sick of the US sponsoring Israel’s campaign against the Palestinians. That doesn’t mean the Palestinians are the good guys, it means that the US constantly has its hand on the scale in a conflict where there are no good guys. And it doesn’t mean someone who is anti-Israel conflates Israel and the American Jewish community.

The bolded is where I am, but people keep telling me it's anti-Semitic. I don't want my tax dollars used to pay for bombs that kill children. Nothing Hamas does changes that. I keep that opinion mostly to myself though because people get very angry when you say that.

Saying "Palestinians" aren't good guys is flat out racist/ethnicist/prejudice by nationality.

There is no other way to characterize the Palestinian cause because Palestine is not a state.

The author equates anti-zionism and antisemitism. One of those views is wrong, the other is just

Most American Jews are Democrats, and have always supported progressive causes. It's interesting you are focusing on a minority to justify your antisemitism to yourself.

The Democratic Party has long accepted the premise that Israel can do whatever it wants in the region. You want to pretend that supporting Israeli atrocities is a minority position, but it’s not.

The extremists won.

You just proved my point. You cannot just say, like it pains you to say it, that antisemitism is wrong, that punching a Jew is wrong, that drawing swastikas is wrong. This is why US Jews cannot engage in dialogue, there is always that insidious current underneath. You absolutely always must make it about more.

This is such a disingenuous argument that is implicitly trying to shut down any real discussion. OF COURSE antisemitism is wrong and Jews should not be targeted. My understanding is that we are all starting from that assumption, although I guess you believe that other people think antisemitism is hunky dory.

If someone here wrote “I think my husband is cheating on me,” do you think the discussion should be 15 posts of “cheating is wrong and men shouldn’t cheat” before we ask why she believes that?

Because they planned to bomb the areas all the families were fleeing towards

Keep doubling down that anything less than a genocide is antisemitic.

Unfortunately, U.S. tax dollars pay for bombs that kill children all over the world. It's not antisemitic to oppose that anywhere, obviously, but it should be equally obvious that there are antisemites who are happy to free-ride along with the outrage about Israel and conflate their hatred of Jews with other people's justified opposition to killing children.

Actually he specifically does not do that.

Your posts are antisemitic. It's about you bringing up that Jews are some sort of genocidal maniacs on a post deploring the fact that US antisemitism is mounting on the right and the left. You can criticize Israel in the Gaza thread, but you bring it here instead on a post about US Jews, in the religion forum. Think about your motivations for that.

Unfortunately, the history of Western civilization (including both ancient and recent history) does not give me much confidence that "we are all starting from" the assumption that antisemitism is wrong and Jews should not be targeted. I'd like to think most people are, but I also think there are more people who aren't starting from that assumption than most American Jews would like to believe.

Tell me you’re not Jewish without telling me you’re not Jewish. If you can say this with a straight face, you have zero understanding of antisemitism in our current society and need to sit down. I can’t do anything but laugh hollowly at your confident assertion that of course everyone agrees that antisemitism is wrong, and that it is a starting shared premise. Do you also think that we live in a postracial society?

I only wish we lived in the world you imagine. Instead, we live in the world where ANY discussion of antisemitism is immediately deflected into criticism of Zionism. Where an article that contains a limited and historical discussion of Israel, and that is primarily about antisemitism in America, swiftly turns into BUT GENOCIDAL ZIONISTS.
