What stats do you need for UVA out-of-state?

I always find the niece and nephew posts so weird. Why would an aunt or uncle know the GPA, test scores and number of APs of a niece or nephew? That’s obsessive at a whole new level.

I was thinking the same. My sister and I are close but even if I had mentioned any of this to her she isn't invested enough to care to post about it on this forum. Like "asking for a friend" whatever!

My IN STATE kid with those stats was WL.

Yep. None of the kids I know from southern states had different scores than the in state kids. Some were lower. It helps that they get fewer apps from places like Mississippi, Tennessee, etc. A 4.2/1400 OOS can be enough from these states, but at a lot of DMV high schools, that’s not top 5% of your class so that’s a rejection.

+1. The best I can tell you is that for both instate and OOS, last year's incoming class at the 75th percentile had a 4.51, a 34, or a 1520 or higher (25 percent of the class was higher). And, as I'm sure you've seen on Chance me on College confidential and Reddit, most of these kids have 12 APs, rank in the top 6% of their class, have national awards, etc. Almost all have taken the most rigorous courses their high school offers.

However, since only 12% of OOS applicants (a greater number of in-state are accepted) are accepted, I suspect the stats will be higher for OOS.

I think the answer is somewhere in the SCHEV report - specifically for OOS - but can't find it quickly tonight. https://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp

Probably not a reach if applicant is from Hawaii.

Actually, Punahou (private) sends a lot of qualified kids to the Continental USA. Like my own college roommate and, of course, Obama. The day we toured UVA they were able to say they had almost achieved the full geographical diversity from all 50 states but not S. Dakota yet

Wow! Does 4.0 uw mean the student never got below an A in high school? Im a parent of a ninth grader, who’s first two semesters were less than perfect. She pulled her grades up to a 3.8 average by some miracle. So she’s already shut out of uva?

Well.... A 4.0 GPA (unweighted) indicates that you have gotten straight A's throughout high school. The 4.51 (UVA's 75th percentile), mentioned above, is weighted of course with points for grades and honors and AP courses.

However, if you go to a private (or public if the rare public that stops at 4.0) that stops at 4.0, then the unweighted GPA will be sent in but the college will know that the school goes only to 4.0 either because their local rep knows it or they can look at the high school profile sent in by the high school college counselor.

Bear in mind that a huge percentage of high school kids today very high GPAS just for this reason. It is what it is.

So chat with your high school's college counselor and ask to see the datapoints for recent graduates (called Naviance in FCPS; privates have their own systems). There is a grid in the lower left hand side of the page. It's a graph of GPA and test scores for your own high school. Green? the student got in. Red?". That will give you a very good feel of what type of grades get grads from your own high school in.

Is 4.0 UW, 10+ APs with 5s or mostly 5s. and 1500+ SAT - is it still a reach ?

Reach is determined in conjunction with admission rate. Having the stats, with thousands of other applicants, just gets you a lottery ticket. A school with a low acceptance rate is a reach for everyone.

Yeah, this is what kills be about college applications in general. You can’t make a mistake after turning 14. Absurd. No wonder kids are stressed.

We moved to Virginia in high school is it was a hard transition. First semester at the new school took them out of the running for UVA.

Sort of. No room for error. The system has gotten ridiculous.

You don't need 4.0 UW to get in OOS UVA, but it helps. Take a look at the College Confidential thread on UVA EA. Most of the posts were of OOS applicants.

https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/t/university-of-virginia-early-action-early-decision-for-fall-2024-admissions/3644835

You will see this:

Daughter waitlisted OOS :frowning: 3.9/4.66 1480 Valedictorian large public high school

Son got waitlisted. OOS. Double legacy. 35 ACT. 4.0UW/4.5W. 15 APs. Large public high school

D24 got in! OOS, 4.0UW/4.7W, SAT 1570, ACT 36, CS major. So excited!

D24 accepted OOS, 1590, 4.0UW, 2 APs (all the school offers), 22 college classes

To give you an idea.

UVA's selectivity for in state is about on par with most selective private's ED round. It is easier to get into, however than most selective private's regular decision round. It is a public school serving the state. That is how it should be.
