What stats do you need for UVA out-of-state?

Is it really easier to get in to UVA from DCPS than from DCPS?

Well, for some, including UVA, they're great schools. I wouldn't do OOS at, say Eastern Carolina, but UVA and some other state schools are clearly in a different league.

Maybe? Our dcps school usually gets a couple admits per year but these are pretty high stat kids anyway (>1500 + high gpa, lots of ECs)

I have a question. Someone told me that these public universities like OOS students because they will pay full tuition. Is that true? For a VA resident who pays taxes, that seems unfair

I’m confused why you think it’s unfair. If your in-state kid doesn’t get in? But the seats are carefully restricted at 30 to 32 percent OOS for UVA (much fewer for UCLA, Berkeley, Texas schools and UNC). So when you apply you know how many slots are available for in-state.

But, yes, a lot of Virginians would like to see more in-state seats at both W&M and UVA.

You’re aware that OOS pay a LOT more? Like double or triple in-state tuition?

But no, all OOS do not pay the full rate because UVA is need blind making decisions. I imagine most do but not all.

My legacy kid had higher stats and very high rigor—also WL

Same, and the kid was a double legacy.

Some of them do but some get generous financial aid. UVA was very generous with an OOS kid I know. Family made less than 100,000 a year.

+1.. UVA is need blind so definitely true that not all OOS pay full tuition

All the OOS kids I know who got in were just like the in state kids who got in. Same stats, near the top of their class. But in these cases a class was fewer than 100 kids or they were homeschooled. No NMSF.

Sort of. No room for error. The system has gotten ridiculous.

So sad!! 4.0 UW GPA is so unforgiving particularly if you are coming from a rigorous magnet HS with no grade inflation and taking on all AP/honors courses ... UMich and UNC are similar too.

It’s unforgiving period. Teachers are people and they teach and grade differently. They are human and have biases and preferences they aren’t even conscious of. I don’t know how ANY kid gets a 4.0 without also navigating personalities and controlling their schedule with that in mind too. It’s not just about working hard, it’s about controlling your schedule and also getting lucky. You pick French in 8th grade but the 11th grade teacher doesn’t do As- you can’t control that. Thais kind of thing happens all the time. I have no idea how anyone gets an UW 4.0 without a ton of luck.

So true!! My current senior is a NMF with 1550/35 but had tough graders in many subjects in high school. This admission process is extremely demoralizing for DC.

I truly believe teachers have their biases and preferences.
