Well.... A 4.0 GPA (unweighted) indicates that you have gotten straight A's throughout high school.  The 4.51 (UVA's 75th percentile), mentioned above, is weighted of course with points for grades and honors and AP courses.

However, if you go to a private (or public if the rare public that stops at 4.0) that stops at 4.0, then the unweighted GPA will be sent in but the college will know that the school goes only to 4.0 either because their local rep knows it or they can look at the high school profile sent in by the high school college counselor.

Bear in mind that a huge percentage of high school kids today very high GPAS just for this reason.  It is what it is.

So chat with your high school's college counselor and ask to see the datapoints for recent graduates (called Naviance in FCPS; privates have their own systems).  There is a grid in the lower left hand side of the page.  It's a graph of GPA and test scores for your own high school.  Green? the student got in.  Red?".  That will give you a very good feel of what type of grades get grads from your own high school in.[/quote]
