| The President of Virginia Tech wants 40 percent of incoming kids to be first generation. It is what it is. This leaves a lot of great kids not getting in. |
The overall university average is pretty meaningless. It's going to vary widely by major |

stop, just stop. |
I think the question is did kids with lower stats than this get in? When we did the VT tour, they told us that GPA and rigor were the two most important considerations. |
Median was 4.10, not 4.20. |
We took the tour there too and while they, like almost every other school, say that grades and rigor are most important, they said their approach is holistic. They look at a lot of factors. They emphasized community service more than some schools. They never promise to admit kids based SOLELY on grades and rigor. None of them do. |
I know a white male from FCPS with high SAT and GPA, but only medium rigor (maybe 6 APs, math ending in AP stats and Calc AB, no English APs) but was Eagle Scout and involved in his church-in for CS. So who knows, maybe they like service. |
Will people stop blaming URM for getting denied? Colleges can't take race/ethnicity into account in admissions decisions anymore. I'm sorry your kid didn't get in but it's not because he's a white male |
| They absolutely do value service...and place significant importance on the answers to their short essay questions. I think this is where quite a few high stat kids stumble. Those questions are hard to answer well in such a short space. My DD told me off hand who of her friends were just "phoning it in" with their answers months ago, with several mentioning how dumb they felt the questions were. Well, surprise, literally all of those high stats kids are now waitlisted or declined. I think with so many high stat kids coming out of FCPS, things like significant service and thoughtful answers to their 4 questions can make a big difference. |
They are 100% clear that they highly value service. It's the school motto! |
Engineering or another major? I feel like technology majors have a completely different criteria to meet from other majors there but maybe I'm off on this. |
My DC surprised us and was admitted with lowest quartile stats. Short answer questions reflected who they are (strong values yet sounded like a 17-year old kid wrote it) and must have made the difference. |
