The comparison of URM&1st Gen vs non UERN/1G is worthless without seeing GPA and test scores.

Interesting to see that Business has a lower acceptance rate than Engineering. That's the only college with a <40% acceptance rate for in-state students. It definitely got more competitive in the last few years. College of Business was 57% for in-state/not 1st gen/not URM in 2020-21 but then dropped to 35% -->30% -->28%.

But even within Business acceptance rates vary a lot. BIT=28%, Management=31%, Marketing=38%, Hospitality & Tourism=40%, Accounting=47%. There's a listing of "Dean of Business" which may be the "undecided" option, that has a 19% acceptance rate. So, if you want the business school, don't apply undecided! Apply as an accounting major. Easy to change your major within the business school.

No reason to parse out first gen/URM in your numbers.

Actually, there is. It shows the acceptance rate for first gen are often lower than others. So those complaining their children are disadvantaged by their privilege are wrong.

+1 There's no uniformly higher acceptance rate for 1st gen students. I just looked up my son's major (he's a sophomore at VT.) Limiting to in-state students, the 1st gen applicants had a lower acceptance rate (57%) than non-1st gen (66%). URM were 1% point lower than non-URM. The big difference is OOS (81%) vs. In-state (65%). They accept a lot more OOS because yield is very low -- 15% vs. 57% for in-state.

That's ONE MAJOR. How do you explain the in-state rate going DOWN for each of the COLLEGES (except Natural Sciences, where it stayed the same) when you parse out the URM and 1st gen students, as OP did?

That is very true. If URM and 1st Gen got in at higher rates, it seems likely it's because the kids who did apply from those groups had higher GPA's and test scores.

My kiddo and many of her friends thought that they wanted to attend a college OOS. They applied to OOS flagships, got accepted and then, all but one, committed to VT if accepted. I am very curious what the yield numbers will look this year.

My kid with a 3.9 was waitlisted in 2022.
They went somewhere else and applied again.

Tech waitlists a lot of high stats kids applying to non engineering majors. Makes sense. My kid was waitlisted for chemistry in 2021 (4.0/4.83/1560SAT/36ACT #2 in class, etc.) same with the rest of the top 10 that applied non-engineering... Parents need to know it's not an automatic thing, there is a sweet spot.

Not urm
Not first Gen
Male applying to business school

Otherwise everting else fit. Varsity sports captain, 8 APs and everything else honors.

Did your child apply for engineering? That's the only school where getting in with that profile would be tough
