But even within Business acceptance rates vary a lot. BIT=28%, Management=31%, Marketing=38%, Hospitality & Tourism=40%, Accounting=47%. There's a listing of "Dean of Business" which may be the "undecided" option, that has a 19% acceptance rate. So, if you want the business school, don't apply undecided! Apply as an accounting major. Easy to change your major within the business school.

No reason to parse out first gen/URM in your numbers.

Purdue has an acceptance rate of 53% and a similar ranking yet we don't hear whining when kids don't get in. It is what it is.

No, but a lot of DMV kids apply there and a lot of them are rejected. No whining.

There will be some movement on the WL. That we know of, DC has three friends, from three different RVA HSs, who all got in (two engineering, one business) yet none will attend. They are all headed OOS, mostly because of finances (reasonable tuition + merit). Great job, Virginia, on retaining your homegrown talent! /s

So it looks like VaTech is a safety for the normal high stats kid.

Their admission rate is a lot higher than a lot of other schools, including the "competitive" majors.

Yes, if not a safety, at least a solid target school. My own son applied to UVA and VA Tech... high-performing FCPS HS, 4.4 wGPA, 1500 SAT (790 Math), rigorous classes including 9 APs (and 2 post-APs -- MV Calc/Linear Alg and CS Data Structures), 2-sport varsity athlete and captain of one team, high level club sport, part-time job, other regular ECs. He finished with level 4 of his foreign language and did not take AP level (which UVA recommends) and he also did not take AP History (which UVA recommends). He applied to College of Engineering and got waitlisted at UVA and accepted at Tech.

Keep in mind engineering also has a bit of self selection. Kids know if stats too low don’t apply. So acceptance rate may be higher than business but applicants might not have same stats.

Actually, that info is helpful to me, as my kid is in the second catagory. For those whose kid are in the first category, it might be helpful to also see the acceptance rate for their category. My kid is also a girl, so gender breakdown would be helpful as well. The more data, the better.

I think the point is that the numbers are close enough to not warrant an additional breakdown (although there are a few cases with larger differences). If you want data on more specific cases, probably better to investigate more yourself.

I did that because if I just shared the in-state overall people would whine that those URM/1st gen students have it easy and the admit rate for their not URM/not 1st gen kids has to be so, so much lower. It's a little lower but, for the most part, not a huge difference.
