VT waitlisted

Around about half the applicants from here got waitlisted - admissions rates dropped almost 20% (?) down to around 13% or 7,000 accepted out of 52,000

If you're the parent of an FCPS student, your child's Naviance should reveal the exact admissions data of all applicants from your school in previous years (GPA and SAT) and whether or not they were accepted all in one huge graph - I expect new information about that to be coming out soon.

How do you know how that half of applicants were waitlisted? Was this already in Naviance? That information definitely isn’t out in our nova public high school. Kids are chatting, yes, but no way they have all the info.

Every single year, we get the same disgruntled parents posting that their kid "should" have gotten in. Well, no - that's not how this works. There are far too many great candidates applying, and competition is fierce. But they refuse to listen.

A year ago 4.10 was 50th percentile. What is going on?

Um... there are thousands of other applicants with the same - or better stats. Why is this hard for you to comprehend?

Maybe NOVA has a higher percentage of bright students than other parts of the state.

This.

Those admissions rates are cold hard numbers... as for that little tidbit about "half of all applicants being waitlisted" is mainly speculation, and I should've been clear on that. General consensus among most seniors is that asking people if they've been waitlisted or not has been pretty much a 50/50

I think the frustration is that the school has a 57% acceptance rate and kids stats are in the top quartile. It's understandable.

VT certainly no longer has a 57% acceptance rate. It's now 13%, and for STEM-oriented students, that number is sure to be even lower.

Purdue has an acceptance rate of 53% and a similar ranking yet we don't hear whining when kids don't get in. It is what it is.

It's been 57% for the past 3 years.

We're not in Indiana.

It's not that low, even if it feels like that when when your kid doesn't get in. There was just as much complaining last year and these were the in-state acceptance rates...

College of Engineering = 45%. (If take out 1st gen/URM, it's 41%)
College of Architecture = 41%, (39%)
College of Business = 35% (28%)
College of Natural Sciences & Environment = 59% (59%)
College of Science = 59% (56%)
College of Liberal Arts & Human Sciences = 46% (39%)
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences = 63% (60%)

Interesting to see that Business has a lower acceptance rate than Engineering. That's the only college with a <40% acceptance rate for in-state students. It definitely got more competitive in the last few years. College of Business was 57% for in-state/not 1st gen/not URM in 2020-21 but then dropped to 35% -->30% -->28%.

But even within Business acceptance rates vary a lot. BIT=28%, Management=31%, Marketing=38%, Hospitality & Tourism=40%, Accounting=47%. There's a listing of "Dean of Business" which may be the "undecided" option, that has a 19% acceptance rate. So, if you want the business school, don't apply undecided! Apply as an accounting major. Easy to change your major within the business school.

Haha! Wonder what the 13% poster has to say now? So strange how people just make up facts.

+1 And VT is really transparent with the data (although it would be great if they also shared GPA/SAT by major!). My son's major had an 83% acceptance rate when he applied (now down to 65%). We were not worried and he got in as expected.

DP. The 13% was derived (erroneously) from data published with their EA announcement. https://news.vt.edu/articles/2024/02/em-cm-admissions-2024.html. 52,365 applications submitted. Target class size - 7085; 7085/52,365=13.5%. This is incorrect and does not factor in the yield multiplier. Assuming the same yield as last year (26.52%), the offer rate would for the current year would have to be 51% (13.5%/26.52%) to meet these numbers. These are overall numbers and I suspect the offer rate for EA would be higher.

^^ PP again. Offer rate = Admit rate.
