VT waitlisted

Assuming he's taking AP/IB classes he can take the SAT a couple more times to get that number up to 1450 and he'll pretty much be able to take his pick short of the upper elite.

You are delusional.

I have had 2 kids with 1500+ SATs and above 4.00 GPAs with a ton of APs and excellent extracurriculars go through this process recently.

Both received a slew of waitlists, deferrals, and outright rejections, including VT and UVA.

Knowing that the waitlist for VT is that expansive makes me feel a little bad that my above 4.2/1520 kid got waitlisted. I thought the waitlist was a little tighter for VT

Wow. 1520 and waitlisted? I keep hearing how crazy it is out there but this makes me very nervous for mine next year.

+1. SCHEV reports that the profile of last year's VT class had a 4.33/4.20/3.86 for the 75th/50th/25th percentiles.

Fortunately, VT wasn't the first choice. Nor was it the first waitlist. UVA also came in as a waitlist.

The kid has a couple of strong out of state options, but hearing that the wait lists have this broad of a range stat wise is a bit disheartening.

Girl applying to engineering school.
Waitlisted
FCPS high school
IB diploma track
4.1 gpa
TO
Robust list of volunteering, activities, clubs, sports, and leadership
We are white knuckling it because she really wants to attend Tech. The zero kids accepted off the waitlist last year makes her nervous.

With VT, 1520 is probably detrimental. Should probably go test optional. Too high freaks them out.

I thought kids won’t going to school anymore what ever happen to that? You seen reports on the news that kids are not going to college anymore.
GPA 3.5 waitlisted

With all of the complaints about grade inflation, a 3.5 GPA might as well be a "C" nowadays.

For VT? Waitlist isn't uncommon.

Things that didn’t help:

One of the top fcps schools
Not urm
Not first Gen
Male applying to business school

Otherwise everting else fit. Varsity sports captain, 8 APs and everything else honors.

The grievance attitude.

Stats are mediocre.

I don’t think it’s a “grievance attitude” to point out factors that are expressly stated as part of the criteria for getting in. VT has said they have a goal of having 40% first Gen students. No other VA college has that publicly stated. That did not help my kid.

https://news.vt.edu/articles/2022/09/admissions-fall-census-2022.html

And a 4.1 and a 1380 are not mediocre and they are above the 50th percentile of VT.

I’m not saying I don’t understand the waitlist, but he definitely had a shot to being accepted.
