I live in a small apartment so even if I walk outside for an hour a day I only get about 5,000-6,000 steps. I struggle to get more steps since I don't go out too much. |
Source? |
I would prioritized 30 minutes or cardio and not worry about the number of steps. |
DP: this is not new information. This 10K myth was debunked a long time ago. |
And yet no one has the source.... |
Can you not google and find the stories yourself? It took ten seconds to find this one (and there’s many more): https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/health-exercise-fitness-walking-study.html. It’s a number based on a marketing campaign. Yes, being active is good but there’s no magic to 10,000. |
Work part time After 40, it’s almost impossible to keep in shape if you have a full time job If you want to sleep properly, get low impact cardio, resistance training, swimming, cook meals, socialize (important for mental health), Full time work is not conducive to human flourishing |

NP. Having a "step goal" is a rough recommendation to just get a little activity. But if you get 5,000 steps running or 5,000 steps going up stairs, those will be better for you than slow putzing around. Think quality, not quantity. 10k steps of putzing around is definitely better than nothing, but ideally one should do something that gets their heart pumping. |
Cardio exercise is certainly an important part of the equation. But as you age its important to maintain movement for bones, joints, and balance. So walking - which is low impact - if done regularly you are helping out a lot of your body. And it is certainly better than no movement at all. So while 10K was an arbitrary figure - it's not a bad goal to aim for. Lower than 3000 k isn't doing much for your over all. |
I walk the 4 miles to work. I also walk to the metro after work. I walk the dog before and after work. I get in 6-7 miles a day. |
You don't have to do 10,000 steps anymore |
Fyi That link doesn't work. |
I guess you will have to look at the ten or so links posted by someone else upthread. |
30 minutes isn’t enough. This is why most of you do need a step tracker to keep you honest. You think “putzing” or 30 minutes of cardio makes you active. It doesn’t. |
