FCPS not following the new state models

It's exhausting that FCPS thinks they know how to parent better than the parent does.

It is a survey about very intimate topics given to students with the data collected and maintained by a third party for profit company with distant ties to facebook. The survey and results are not private, as the data is tied to the specific minor FCPS student and their school issued computers. Basically it allows the private company to monetize intimate student information, which is a complete violation of their rights and data privacy.

FCPS has chosen to make this invasive survey automatic, unless the parents opt out.

I am not a fan of the SEL screener, but to describe the questioning as “intimate” is a stretch.

Asking kids about their sexual habits, sexual orientation, drug use, depression, suicidal thoughts, drinking habits, family life, etc are by definition intimate, personal questions that FCPS has no right to share with a 3rd party for profit company.

The surveys are intimate, and identifiable, linked to a specific student.

They need to be opt in, not opt out.

If you want your kid to share all that stuff with FCPS, then opt them in.

I suspect if FCPS used opt in, only around 5 to 10% of parents would be willing to have their kids participate in this SEL survey, and the county sex and drugs survey.

None of that is in the SEL survey dummy. You’re talking about the Fairfax County Youth Survey. I don’t even have kids old enough to take that one and I know the difference. People may have good reasons to want their child to take one of these surveys and opt out of the other. To conflate the two is spreading bad information.

At least get your facts straight before trying to influence other people. I don’t know what crap you are reading online to get your information, but maybe stop to consider whether the source is telling the truth or whether they just want to evoke a certain reaction from you to suit their own agenda.

A few additional fun facts about the for-profit SEL and Panorama:

1. Panorama is co-founded by Attorney General Merrick Garland’s son-in-law, Xan Tanner.
2. Garland targeted parents and labeled them as domestic terrorists for speaking up at school board meetings and had the FBI investigating them. One of the things parents spoke against was the SEL program at schools.
3. The questions in the screener are extremely INTRUSIVE in that they question students about personal things, such as sexual orientation. Adults shouldn’t be asking these kind of questions to minors because it normalizes strangers crossing children’s boundaries. That is a safety concern and it should be illegal to do so.
4. In spite of opting out from the SEL screener, FCPS still instructs ALL students on SEL practices and spends an excessive amount of resources, such as time and money, to train teachers on this for-profit program. Many parents complained in this blog that they couldn’t understand the SEL reports on their children. Neither could the teachers.
5. Last year, parents complained that in spite of submitting the Opt-out form for SEL, the SIS system still would show the kids as participating.
6. Even if you Opt your child out, Panorama still has access to your child’s student information with FCPS.

To get a better idea about the conflict of interest SEL represents in FCPS, this is a good read:

Because they were.

Parents were physically and verbally attacking school board members. Death threats over public health concerns. Parents were out of control.

The appause by the parents attending was overwhelming, including all of the liberal parents, some of whom are very politically active on local political offices.

One parent then spoke in favor of the surveys and the opt out model. She was met by polite silence by the parents in attendance.

This is not a republican vs democrat issue. Anyone who claims this is a fool, and likely not a parent.

Protecting student data privacy should be one of the foremost responsibilities of the schools.

An opt in process will allow their private teenage musings to be a bit more secure.

If FCPS truly believed that they were in the right and that parents wanted all these surveys, then they would embrace an opt in permission model. The fact that FCPS refuses to, down to reseting opt outs back to opt in every school year in SIS, sometimes mid year, speaks volumes about their intentions.

The non parents here might be shocked, but guess what? Liberal parents want their kids' data privacy protected too.

yeah, it’s quite useless. The elementary kids aren’t even sure how to respond to the questions. And, the teachers don’t use this data. So, who is addressing this or using this data?

The absolute LIES you are believing is incredible!

For the 100th time, the SEL screener asks ZERO questions about anyone’s sexual orientation. NONE.

I have no idea what this “SEL program” is that teachers are trained on. It literally doesn’t exist. There are various curriculums that school counselors use in their monthly lessons, but that’s been happening since the dawn of time.

I am really concerned about your paranoia and inability to think critically. You’ve taken some article from a NY paper and somehow extrapolated it to apply to FCPS. But then again, you probably don’t even have kids or even live in Fairfax County.
