In the fine print, the new models said schools should obtain permission from parents before administering surveys. I checked SIS and my child was automatically opted in for the SEL screener even though last year we opted out. I had to opt out again for this year.
Automatically opting in kids to the ridiculous SEL screener goes against the new rules. |
Glad to hear the new models are opt in ratger than opt out. FCPS needs to get on board. |
How do you change it to Opt Out? |
Oh my dear. Is it exhausting constantly being upset about everything? Asking for real... |
What is a SEL screener? |
you will be asked. You’ll get a form later on in the year asking you if you would like to opt out. |
It is a survey about very intimate topics given to students with the data collected and maintained by a third party for profit company with distant ties to facebook. The survey and results are not private, as the data is tied to the specific minor FCPS student and their school issued computers. Basically it allows the private company to monetize intimate student information, which is a complete violation of their rights and data privacy. FCPS has chosen to make this invasive survey automatic, unless the parents opt out. |
You will get a notice before the surveys saying you can opt out. This qualifies. |
You can change it in parent view in sis. |
FYI, this whole paragraph is called "stacking the deck" and all these talking points are led by the right wing parent groups, but not grounded in truth. Here is why it exists and how FCPS uses it: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety...otional-learning-sel Here is the company https://www.panoramaed.com/ (note, M Zuckerburg is an investor, and the company is not at all connected with FB/Meta) HEre is the privacy statement; FCPS shares limited student data with Panorama Education for students participating in the screener. This data includes: student name, student ID, school, student email, grade level, graduation year, gender, ethnicity, Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) status, English learner (EL) status, and special education (SPED) status. If a student is opted out of the screener, FCPS stops sharing new data with Panorama Education. Previous screener results and demographic data remains in the Panorama platform unless a data deletion is requested. Panorama Education has signed FCPS data confidentiality agreements that ensures they maintain confidentiality of any data they receive. Agreeing to limit the use of student data to only the purpose for which it is collected is one of the requirements of this agreement. Additionally, Panorama Education complies with all applicable federal laws, including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA), as well as state and local regulations concerning student data. Absolutely opt out but do so based on facts, not propaganda. |
It must be exhausting to live everyday so paranoid. |
I am not a fan of the SEL screener, but to describe the questioning as “intimate” is a stretch. |
tl:dr - republicans are liars |
OP - in general, our FCPS pyramid did a lousy job re: opt-out students.
And this was a decade ago, so the issues were different. They just said, and that's if I caught it ... "oops" we forgot/didn't remember/didn't check. I truly think it was not a planned course of action on their part. It was worse because it was just incompetence. |
