FCPS not following the new state models

In the fine print, the new models said schools should obtain permission from parents before administering surveys. I checked SIS and my child was automatically opted in for the SEL screener even though last year we opted out. I had to opt out again for this year.

Automatically opting in kids to the ridiculous SEL screener goes against the new rules.

you will be asked. You’ll get a form later on in the year asking you if you would like to opt out.

You will get a notice before the surveys saying you can opt out. This qualifies.

HEre is the privacy statement; FCPS shares limited student data with Panorama Education for students participating in the screener. This data includes: student name, student ID, school, student email, grade level, graduation year, gender, ethnicity, Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) status, English learner (EL) status, and special education (SPED) status. If a student is opted out of the screener, FCPS stops sharing new data with Panorama Education. Previous screener results and demographic data remains in the Panorama platform unless a data deletion is requested.

Panorama Education has signed FCPS data confidentiality agreements that ensures they maintain confidentiality of any data they receive. Agreeing to limit the use of student data to only the purpose for which it is collected is one of the requirements of this agreement. Additionally, Panorama Education complies with all applicable federal laws, including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA), as well as state and local regulations concerning student data.

Absolutely opt out but do so based on facts, not propaganda.

I am not a fan of the SEL screener, but to describe the questioning as “intimate” is a stretch.

OP - in general, our FCPS pyramid did a lousy job re: opt-out students.

And this was a decade ago, so the issues were different. They just said, and that's if I caught it ... "oops" we forgot/didn't remember/didn't check. I truly think it was not a planned course of action on their part. It was worse because it was just incompetence.
