It is a matter of compatibility. Would never work.

I’m reasonably liberal, especially by todays standard of conservative. I definitely do not like liberal women. Strong preference for conservative women.

That writer is ridiculous. She doesn’t want to be penned down into being a stay at home wife but she wants a guy to pay for dates. That seems super hypocritical — she wants him to pay for stuff but allow her total financial independence. Makes no sense.

If by masculine she means a guy who is athletic, good a building stuff, outdoorsy—there are tons of those who are progressive politically, or at least are not socially conservative. A lot of those guys are environmentalists and appreciate strong independent women who can take care of themselves. And they are also often good with kids because kids love all that stuff naturally. It’s not hard to find guys like that, especially if you get outside DC or other urban areas.

This is kind of a shrug to me. Not a useful discussion. It equates "masculinity" with specific actions that are not especially important. Who pays for the first date just isn't that big a thing. I very briefly dated a guy who paid for EVERYthing to the point it quickly felt condescending and show-offy, and he wasn't my idea of masculine at all. The most masculine man I know now is also extremely liberal politically and personally. But I don't define "masculine" in terms of "pays for things, holds the door for the woman (only?), 'providing for' the woman."

Exactly this. Paying for dates or going to work while I stay home is not masculinity. To me, masculinity means that I feel safe physically and emotionally in a man's presence. That he would stand up for me and protect me if I was being mistreated. In a partnership especially, it's the ability to have insight into my needs and the confidence to take care of them.

I can't say conservative men typically meet this bar.

Well said! Although, I think your description is applicable to 'partners' in general and not just a masculine (or feminine) trait. Whether someone is 'masculine' enough for me is more about whether I'm attracted to them or not - and there are multiple layers to attraction. But, I definitely agree that paying for stuff and opening doors is definitely not one of the layers.

That’s because substantially all heterosexual American black men are “conservative” in the non-political sense of the term.

This is so gobsmackingly obvious it’s honestly funny watching liberal women flail about trying to understand.

Masculine men do not GAF if she is liberal or conservative.

I've dated many Black women in DC who vote for Democrats but are conservative in how they live their lives and privately say all the sht that would lead to a social media pile on.

You all are crazy. I'm built like The Rock and blow my nose with sandpaper. But I vote Democrat. If anyone thinks I'm not masculine, go ahead, let's meet truck to truck and see who wins.

Only (straight) white guys are “liberal” to the standard that white liberal women want. Most white liberal women would be horrified by what black, Latino, and immigrant men think of their pet political issues.

If you really are everything you say, you know you’re the exception and not the rule. So don’t pretend you’re part of a massive group.
