It's more the latter, or they are wealthy people like Sujatha Hampton, the education chair of the NAACP. She sent her daughter to Langley and then rants against those dissatisfied with the crap conditions that prevail in FCPS. |
She is the funniest crying about how bad and racist white people are and then makes sure she lives not only in a predominatley white area, but one that has been predominately Republican for a long time. Scary, scary. |
She and Tholen are both fake AF. |
Some of us are caught in between. Not necessary super happy with this SB but not a fan of some of the Open FCPS rhetoric. |
I’m not crazy about some of the Open FCPS rhetoric either, but at the end of the day it’s Elaine Tholen and her SB cronies who are hurting our pyramid, not Sue Zoldak or Jo Jo Sears. |
This is a very real problem. There are many moderate democrats/true "liberals" who are very unhappy. Those who stand up are truly admirable because at a minimum they will be considered to be "closet Republicans" and complicit in racism, or they will be called outright racists and white supremacists. (Those on the right are called this also, of course, but are more used to it.) |
I can see that. But if you feel that way, sign the petition (in particular Omeish since any ffx vter can sign that one). Once the petition meets the recall threshold, get together with your centrist and left of center friends and put up a true moderate. Put up a Meghan or a Chap. Trust me, the #openfcps will be thrilled to have moderates replace the extreme left wing members. If the centrists and traditional liberals don't help stand up to the extreme left wing crazies taking over your party, we are all doomed. Stand up for your kids and our public school system by signing the recall, then put up a fiscally aware, middle of the road moderate who understands schools. Stand up for a school board that wants to focus on education and not on politics. Just because you sign the petition, does not mean that you are committing to voting for the nexf Elizabeth Schultz. If you want a moderate school board and hate the incompetence of this radical school board, sign the petition and go find a moderate to run. |
I’m not a fan of some of the rhetoric either. But, they got schools open in the spring and the state law guaranteeing 5 days of school through. The SB would have managed to dither away the whole year and we’d be looking at a hybrid reopening in August without them. On the flip side, the SB and Brabrand use a lot of nice buzz swords, like equity, and “meeting by name and by need,” then sell kids out to the unions. I’ve reached the point where I’m looking at what the various parties are doing, and putting a lot less emphasis on what they say. I also follow Do Better FCPS more closely and interact with them. They also have an anti-union, school choice, Younkin for Governor PAC, which I do not contribute to. But, they have a better, more inclusive tone, are more bipartisan, and do a nice job FOIA’ing information and posting it. |
| When does the recall happen so this thread can die? |
+1. I look at it like this. At some point, moderate Rs had to break with Trump or be complicit. Identifying with the goals of a political party does not mean you owe them undying fealty in all things. At some point, you either stand up and say no. Or, you’re Mitch McConnell. I was a parent endorsed slate of candidates for the next election, all of whom are actually focused on the “Main Thing” and are in favor of academic excellence and good financial stewardship. And committed to actually tackling real problems, like Western County boundaries and Eastern County IB. And all of whom have committed to not taking a dime from educational special interests (testing companies, unions, etc). Parent funded only. In this county, it can be done. |

^^^ #openfcps has a new parents group forming, as a non political grass roots parents group focused on the things you mentioned. They are developing a candidate questionnaire for future elections.
The peadership is split 50/50 D/R. They are hoping to primarily focus on issues that are student centered, education centered, and which most parents from most political perspectives agree upon. That group seems to be very skilled with bringing in sunshine through foia requests. They also see to be really in tune to special ed issues. I hope they are able to build and grow so there is a local parents group to be a voice for students and to get a seat at the table. |
Anything associated with openfcps is tainted as a MAGA Group, rightly or wronglfy. |
Keep trying. This is a flat out lie. |
More wrongly than rightly, but the effort by the Fairfax Democrat leadership (Jack Kiraly, Geof Schoradt, etc) to equate #OpenFCPS supporters with MAGA, the KKK, etc, is already backfiring. It turns out people, including many left-center Democrats, don’t like being labeled by a bunch of self-styled progressive DS merely for having the temerity to express opinions that differ from those espoused by the FCPS School Board. |
