Dear middle-aged women: capri pants do nothing for you.

Apologies if this was covered in the first 18 pages. I finally just got curious how this thread could be so long and only skimmed the last two pages.

I confess to having read all 19 pages and the answer is not entirely clear to me.

From what I gather, the major sin capris commit is to end in the middle of your calf where it is widest. This is said to make you look "stumpy." a great word I have failed to use often enough in my many decades.

I too am wondering if the capirs police find it acceptable to wear pants that end just below the knees. Some of the anti-capris brigade seem to approve of ankle pants, which I believe end a few inches above the ankle.

Clarifications appreciated!

Thanks, pp (I am the above poster). I don't have the mid calf and can see how that can make you look stumpy. I have a pair of just below the knees in white that I thought were cute, but confess that I have no sense of style. I mostly wore skirts/dresses but that got tough with toddlers. And my thighs, though long and thin, have cellulite and are crazy pasty white. So shorts are a no go for me. So these just below the knees were my 'mom at the playground' outfit.

Capri police, please clarify!

At least they cover up the cellulite and varicose veins (and I'm speaking for myself here as much as for anyone else). Shorts are worse, IMO.

I think so too. Honestly, I think the women should just wear shorts. I don't care if they're overweight, I don't care if they have varicose veins. Capri pants just make everyone look strange.

I also see women who are older look great in a lot clothes that you, in your infinite fashion fascism, probably don't like. This ageist, sexist thread is boring and stupid. I suspect you are boring and stupid also.

No ageism here (unless you want to say I'm ageist against everyone who's hit puberty).

Like a pp said, capris are cute on the 12 and under crowd. After that, they just don't look good. I don't care if you're an athletic twenty year old or a fit forty year old. Odds are they're just not flattering. I only specified middle-aged women because they're the only ones I have seen in them. If every twenty-something I saw today had been in capris, my thread title would have been "Dear 20 year olds: capris do nothing for you."

Also, what sexism? If I had said men look good in capris but women look terrible I could see where the allegation was coming from. As far as I know, capri pants aren't a style for men. If they are and I've just missed it, I imagine they make men look strange too.

Actually capri pants were THE mens fashion about 100 years ago.

This isn't like the thread that says once you're over a certain age/weight you shouldn't wear shorts. I'm just trying to spread the friendly message that I have seen more leprechauns than I have people who look good in capris.

I assume what OP means is that they make your legs look shorter. Which is true. But the fact is, for those of us with bad legs, stumpiness is only one unfortunate problem we have to contend with. There's also the cellulite and varicose veins previously mentioned, which are horribly exposed by ANY length of shorts, and it's too damn hot to wear long pants. Thus, capris. Not too revealing, not too hot in the summer. They do look best on people with very thin, long legs, but what doesn't!? I know I look bad in mine, but I see women with long legs who look great in them. Sigh.

Have never worn a pair. Never owned a pair. They look awful on everyone over the age of 10. STOP WEARING THIS.

I'll give you my capris when you pry it from my cold, dead, middle-age hands.

Who resurrected this thread!?!?! Summer is almost over, people, get over it!!!

Love my capris....all 10 pairs and I'll never give them up....and I do look good in them. But even for those who don't look like a model....so what! If they are comfortable and modest, then it's all good.

Op --find a real issue to rail against.

I'm resurrecting this thread with the hope that it will bring Spring weather

Thank you for the reminder to pull out all my capris! LOVE MY CAPRIS

I'm wearing mine tomorrow while shoveling snow!

Just love the capris thread--thanks for the resurrection. Somewhere in this thread is one of my favorite DCUM lines:

"I am pretty sure that middle aged women wearing capris and Tory Burch sandals caused the financial crisis."

me too! That's the nice thing about getting older. I don't care what others think of me and I think even less of OP's who post things like this. I love my life. I've done what I wanted. Kids are off to college. I've conquered mountains no one else has and I can buy and sell you before breakfast. Why should I care what you think of my superficial appearance? Why should accomplished women care what some stupid young OP, male or female, thinks?

Truly a great for the DCUM Hall of Fame!

This thread needs to be resurrected every spring because we still haven't solved the problem: what do middle aged women with bad legs wear in the summer around here?

Tailored capris with a nice leather flip flop and tank top is classic. Baggier cargo or yoga style capris are also super cute. This is how most A list celebs dress, so I'm not sure why the OP is fixated on this.

I'm 5'9" and capris, tank top, and flip flops are my summer uniform.
