BRYC Girls TD Larry Best leaving for Washington Spirit

Heres the question:

Is Spirit trying to copy the MD model when they essentailly gave the program to Pipeline-Sac. If so, then Spirit VA DA as you currently know it will be dissolved and FCv will take it over....to include the dues

There’s no reason to think they are considering this.

There is no reason to think they are not considering this.

The only thing that is certain is the uncertainty.

You say there is no question that WS will field a VA GDA team in the fall of 2019. Best's email makes no such indication. How do you know this?

If such an arrangement is on the table and/or VA DA will continue in some form into the 2019-2020 season then it is easy enough to say so. The possible scenario of FCV as rumor simply makes the email reply sound very non-committal and almost contingent upon XYZ happening.

It does sound more like another club will have to carry the weight of the DA in VA in order for it to continue under the Spirit name. And considering the Academy application deadline for new clubs closed on December 15th the clock is ticking on existing clubs let US Soccer know whether or not they wish to continue membership. So there is a real clock ticking for Spirit to make up their mind to continue or not to continue the VA membership.

So with all of that, the email comes of as stalling with eventual bad news than it is being forthcoming.

There will be a Spirit DA in VA. It's called FCV. Go on their facebook. Nonstop promoting of the NWSL draft and Spirit.

LOL you’re a bit nuts. They have a mention of the draft and support for women’s soccer. They aren’t promoting Spirit. Of course, their TD is on the pro team’s staff and it is the draft, so of course he has a presence there. There’s no indication that what you are saying will happen and there’s also no reason for Spirit to give up control of their DA and revenue stream to FCV. If they do make that decision, it’s a foolish one

Thanks for reaching out and its nice to hear from you. In the soccer landscape (especially youth) the rumors can circulate like wildfire. I can assure you that no decisions have been made about the Spirit youth model or programming for 2019 and beyond.

Right now it's business as usual with the Spirit youth programing and DA support continuing this spring for both the Virginia and Maryland DA programs.

Thanks again for reaching out.

Cheers,

LRB

Ouch, no decision on 2019 yet? Why not? Everyone else is having ID sessions - FCV and Arlington already have dates.

It's a neutral, safe answer.

Probably because the new CEO wants to review the books to ensure the organization is OK on cashflow and provides a benefit to the organization. Once that's confirmed, he can decide to continue. Not an earth shattering idea and, quite frankly, ID sessions are not much different than any club cattle call anyway. Not much benefit to having them.

As a professional, whenever companies I worked for had CEO, etc changes, even when it turned out to be a lie, we were assured we still had our jobs. In soccer world, when there have been management team changes, we were told the program would continue.

I'm not saying VA DA will go away, but I just started to feel anxious because he didn't say it wouldn't. I'd feel a lot better - as a Spirit parent - if he said ID sessions would be announced soon and/or the program would continue. He didn't.

So now it makes me think I should be coming up with a back up plan.

You should always have a backup plan no matter where you are. You don't think FCV parents have backup plans? That's a club that routinely throws out their players for the next hot thing that walks in.

If my DD is happy where is, I don't. Why waste my time or another club's at an ID session for a club we won't be joining?

FCV nay be different. They are notorious for the churning through players.

The owner was a co-owner so he is familiar with the books already. You also don’t buy a company without seeing the books already.

If Spirit is keeping VA DA for the 2019-2020 season it is very easy to say so. The email reply also did not denounce the rumors but acknowledged that such rumors exist.

Bad news is always delivered later not sooner.

Sorry, this isn't correct. Larry Best is new and didn't have knowledge of the books. If you are saying that Baldwin made the call last November and they are keeping it under wraps like some kind of big conspiracy, then that's different.

And I'll say this....if they are doing that then they will lose hundreds and hundreds of happy, paying customers, not only in DA families but tickets, season tickets, and fans. Those who would be screwed by such a scenario would never support the club again.

That's the biggest reason I think this is all hogwash. Why would someone throw away a big revenue source and alienate their most loyal fans?

Exactly. No intelligent parent with a child at FCV doesn't have a backup plan. And those who don't learn, some quicker than others
