Yes! Good grief. |
I'm going to start a separate thread for people to discuss the appropriateness of short shorts both in schools and in general as a returning fashion trend for men. |
Except at Oyster, the abusive teacher was immediately removed from the classroom and the police were notified. He was then arrested the next day. Oyster involved the police very early, which made it very difficult for the abuser to flee the country and abuse other boys…Beauvoir, not so much. |
Is that true? The difference appears to be that the Oyster teacher didn't flee. He could have easily left town as soon as he was removed from the school. I think both schools acted in very similar manners. |
I think a good "red flag" is spending a great deal of time OUTSIDE the classroom with your students. Any healthy teacher needs time AWAY from their students to rejuvenate. Spending weekends, dinners, and even frequent lunches with your students is not an automatic sign but it should cause some scrutiny.

Definitely agree but I think this guy admitted to committing these crimes in the classroom. |
Where is this Beauvoir and do we know if the individual involved wore either short shorts or a tight shirt? |
My understanding is that Beauvoir called the police after the teacher was escorted off campus. This is from a Washington Post article: "Police have been looking for Toth since June 2008, when Beauvoir officials found the explicit photos, confronted him and then had him escorted to the end of the cathedral driveway. They called police that day, but Toth was already gone." Regarding Pena, the news reports I've read/seen seem to indicate that police were called before (but the same day) that Pena was removed from the classroom. I can't find anything that gives that exact timeline, but this is pretty typical: "According to the Metropolitan Police Department, investigators received information Monday about an allegation of sexual abuse involving a juvenile at Oyster-Adams Bilingual School. Giovanni Peña, 31, was arrested Tuesday by members of the Youth Investigations Division and charged with second degree sexual abuse of a child." |
True, but he a "total involvement" type teacher, was always with students, weekends, after school projects, musical, track team, lunches. It was what earned him praise, working with the kids sooooo much, but it perhaps should have also caused some scrutiny if he was not showing a good life balance. For teachers who try to live that life of total involvement, they have to be very careful and should expect extra scrutiny and take extra precautions. |
Oyster families just received a letter via email that states, in part: "When we became aware of the incident, we immediately coordinated with the Metropolitan Police Department and took precautions to secure the safety and well-being of students." So the MPD was contacted "immediately" after the abuse was reported to the Oyster admin. I don't know if Mr. Pena had to surrender his passport/was placed under surveillance, but it seems pretty clear that MPD was not called after Mr. Pena was forced to leave the school--which appears to be what happened at Beauvoir. |
Private school. Notorious case a few years ago. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crime/former-dc-teacher-makes-fbi-most-wanted-list-after-2008-child-porn-discovery/2012/05/16/gIQAPJJHUU_story.html |
Thanks for the link to the article on Beauvoir. That'd horrifying I haven't even finished reading it but with the camera what a horrible sicko. |
Definitely agree but I think this guy admitted to committing these crimes in the classroom. In the classroom?? How is that possible. So sad. |
He was finally caught in Nicaragua and extradited back to the US. Serving 25 year sentence. |
Good that the Oyster pervert is sitting in jail now. I hope other abusers stop, or they'll go to lock-up too. I hear it's not so nice there. |
