Without a phone you not only lack the ability to communicate with friends, you lack maps and GPS, you lack money if you were using digital payment apps, and you lack the ability to order an uber.

If he was robbed of his phone the persons responsible should be charged with manslaughter at the very least.

All of this. 💯 agree. So many of these responses are absolutely disgusting.

With a phone, he might not have even known the name of the place (hotel?) he was staying at. And if Airbnb, zero chance he knew the address without his phone. It’s absolutely terrifying to be without your phone in 2026 in a foreign country.

Sadly, the most likely scenario -- the one supported by actual video evidence -- is that the poor kid was intoxicated and disoriented and the victim of a terrible accident. And that's it.

What about the cellphone? Did he sell it?

The video shows him falling into the water alone. The phone is irrelevant. Whether lost or stolen, the poor guy wasn't thrown into the water by anyone else.

The drunk at 3am part did not help. Getting robbed of your phone sober in broad daylight is a much different situation.

Stop victim blaming! Spain is a first world country and a very top travel destination worldwide, which markets itself as super fun and super safe. Acting like getting pickpocketed, mugged, or even worse just comes with the territory of being out late at night and intoxicated is disgusting. Stop being numb to this erosion of civilized society.

Just because his wallet was found in the water doesn’t rule out foul play. A seasoned criminal would take the Euros and/or credit cards out and quickly discard the wallet. A migrant was found with his phone. A migrant just murdered a college girl on a Chicago beach late at night less than a week ago.

There was nothing missing from his wallet. And the "migrant" who murdered the poor girl in Chicago has nothing to do with anything.

I've lost my phone. I know others who have lost their phones. I've also been lost in cities and neighborhoods I'm unfamiliar with.

But I've never walked off of a pier into the water as a result.

DC has had 454 violent crimes in 2026 so far. How many of them were committed by "migrants" do you think? I'm guessing not many. STOP blaming immigrants for everything.

You're a troll. The investigation is in its infancy.

Interesting. You're telling me I can't draw conclusions because the investigation is in its "infancy," yet here you are drawing conclusions.

Reliable Spanish media (El Pais, etc.) is reporting that the police have video from nearby cameras that clearly show the poor guy talking to someone outside of the club, then heading off by himself and falling into the water alone "with no third party present." The report also says that his wallet was recovered in the water with nothing missing. The video hasn't been released to the public and maybe never will be, but I have to assume the family will see it.

Care to wager a bet that this is what the final conclusion is going to be, as opposed to all the bullshit speculation that is going on in this thread?

Please use your head.

How would authorities immediately know what if anything was missing when the owner is dead?

When was his phone stolen?

He set his phone on the beach to take a swim but jumped in the water with his wallet?

The stolen phone alone teases out SOMETHING nefarious happened.

Something nefarious did happen! I hate that his friends left him. His phone was stolen. I have to think he was drugged.

It doesn’t ultimately matter. There’s no way to untangle a series of unfortunate things happening that culminated in an un-savvy drunk kid falling into water and dying in a way that lays criminal liability on anyone. You could say he was over served, and his friends ditched him, and maybe his phone was stolen because it’s Spain and that’s common and he was out at night drunk so he was an easy target, and all of those things may be true and not change the fact it just came down to an accident. He fell into water and drowned the way a LOT of kids do on spring break every year.

This story happens in some way every spring. The kid who jumped off the pirate cruise in Nassau a few years ago and was never seen again, the girl from Ashburn who drowned in the DR. Even in the U.S. there’s been stories in the past year from Nashville and somewhere in Texas where the kids get drunk and just wander into a body of water and die. Young kids who are traveling alone, not very wise, and often drunk - it’s a bad combo. But it doesn’t mean anyone is criminally to blame.

It’s not “disgusting” to point out that certain behaviors are dangerous and contribute to the likelihood that something bad happens.

Yea, this.

According to the reports by responsible media—and not the bullshit speculation by racists with anti-immigrant agendas—yes, the phone was stolen in one way or another but the authorities are satisfied that however it happened it was unconnected to his death. And yes the reports are that the wallet was found with cash and credit cards. I suppose a thief could have taken SOME of the cash and SOME of the credit cards and left the rest but that doesn’t seem likely.

When all is said and done, sadly, we will be looking at a poor college student who was way too drunk and possibly intoxicated on something else and fell into the water and drowned. And that’s it. You can’t pin this tragedy on anything or anybody else.
