Missing Alabama student in Barcelona

Anonymous
Anyone following this? It’s heartbreaking. A student from Alabama visited his friends in Barcelona and went missing.

His parents must be worried sick. A parents worse nightmare. Hopefully he’s found (and okay)

You can literally go on Google and type in Alabama student… or Barcelona… etc and it would pop up.

There are like 10 million heartbreaking things in the world today.

It says the police has his phone but doesn’t say how. Why do friends keep leaving friends drunk?!?

That's just work that everyone has to do due to a lazy OP top post. Do better next time.

The Shoko bar was on the beachfront.
"The area immediately adjacent to
Go Beach Club is the La Mina neighborhood (part of Sant Adrià de Besòs), which is widely considered one of the most troubled areas in the Barcelona metropolitan region. While "gang-controlled" is a strong term, it is officially recognized by local authorities and security experts as a high-conflict zone with significant organized crime activity."

The family should contact a ransom broker: https://www.aon.com/middle-east/risk-solutions/kidnap-ransom-extortion-solutions.jsp

Someone in another thread that was deleted (I assume because it was duplicative) was theorizing that he was trafficked for organ harvesting. That seems very far fetched to me, but is that seriously being discussed somewhere? I haven’t read any articles on it.

No. Barcelona has so much petty crime, and his phone was recovered after being stolen (person was arrested) but major crime of this sort would be rare. Victims of organ trafficking are usually poor people and migrants, not wealthy college kids from the US who would attract attention.

Yeah, that’s what I thought too.

Human trafficking targets are typically vulnerable populations. Homeless, Refugees and runaways. Middle class Americans are not typically targets because someone is going to come look for you immediately. That’s not to say he wasn’t a victim of a crime, but it is pretty unlikely that it is human trafficking.

Right, that theory made no sense, but the poster claimed to work in insurance where there has a whole division dedicated to trafficking. Yeah right.

This made me think of a couple of scams targeting men that are increasingly common (mainly South America):

1. Tourist guy decides he wants a "date" and hops on the apps, he finds an attractive woman, she's interested, they meet, she drugs him and robs him.

2. Tourist guy is in a bar, a woman approaches him and hits on him, they start drinking, druged and robbed.

3. Tourist guy meets a girl, she invites him out to a bar, he gets drinks with her, she leaves, the bartenders (in on the scam) demand a very high payment for the drinks/meal.

Men need to be aware of their surroundings too. Possible that he could have been drugged, robbed, and lost.

You cannot rule it out. The criminal element that hangs out in that alley near Shoko is part of organized crime.
