Human trafficking targets are typically vulnerable populations. Homeless, Refugees and runaways. Middle class Americans are not typically targets because someone is going to come look for you immediately. That’s not to say he wasn’t a victim of a crime, but it is pretty unlikely that it is human trafficking.

Right, that theory made no sense, but the poster claimed to work in insurance where there has a whole division dedicated to trafficking. Yeah right.

That was me. I posted above. You aren't worth my time but go ahead and google.

It's been reported he is seen on video leaving the bar with someone (doesn't say male or female). https://www.cbs42.com/news/missing/reports-police-suspect-foul-play-in-disappearance-of-university-of-alabama-student-james-paul-gracey-in-spain/

Yes, the phone was on that person.

No need to be hostile. If this is so prevalent, feel free to post some sources and I will take a look. As others have mentioned, it seems more likely this would target poor kids in developing nations rather than American study abroad students.

There's some good intel here:

https://websleuths.com/threads/spain-james-%E2%80%9Cjimmy%E2%80%9D-gracey-ua-student-from-chicago-barcelona-17-march-2026.769370/page-3

wanted to separate what I’ve been told into what seems definite and what is more speculative. All of these are my musings now. As I posted earlier, the story about him “being jumped” and/or “being jumped on the beach” seems to persist here locally in Illinois. Knowing now that the police called the father, I wonder why they called Jimmy’s emergency contact. Bc they had a lost phone in their possession? Seems unlikely. Bc the girl he was with came to them and told them she saw him being attacked? Bc the person they got the phone from is super sketchy? The motive evades me. That said, I have to imagine that the Barcelona/Catalan police are pretty familiar with the local regulars who frequent these tourist destinations, waiting for inebriated foreigners to become easy targets for pickpocketing. I’m sure the same thieves keep criming, and the police know them by sight. Maybe they saw one of these frequent grifters and shook them down, found the phone on them. Maybe that person knew something- maybe nothing. I want to know what they saw on the CCTV footage. Being such a popular area, it has to have tons of surveillance- and I want to know if what they saw is why there may be search vessels in the water. All completely JMVHO

Sounds like he was with an American girl he knew and was robbed for the chain and now he is missing. They stole his phone too and the police recovered the phone (and maybe the chain)?

I don't think so. The person was an American girl. The phone was with someone else.

Np, I was just in Barcelona with classmates for a foreign studies course a week ago. One of my classmates met a guy on a local dating site while we were there and went back to her hotel with him after a team dinner. My other classmates treated it as normal, but I couldn't believe she would do something so dumb in a strange land with a stranger.

Anyway, I hope the student is found and returns safely.

I don't think this poor boy is alive right now, PP. I'm guessing robbery gone wrong, he reacted badly to the drugs they gave him or choked on his vomit. But I would so love to be wrong!

OP, do you know how many people are killed in the US? College students in Austin were just murdered about two weeks ago. Spain is definitely safer than the US.

What did the girl say? How did he go missing?

This is my personal nightmare.

I can't help but think of what happened to American college student Sean Reilly, who suffered a traumatic brain injury after being assaulted and thrown off a bridge in Barcelona as documented in HBO's Coma.

^^ His family and friends didn't know what happened to him for days since there was no identification and he had been brought to a hospital unconscious.

Any chance he drowned?
